Chelsea’s £60m new boy Joao Pedro reveals he won’t celebrate semi-final goal after ‘dream’ move

New £60m Chelsea star Joao Pedro made his debut in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final win as a substitute and already has his eyes on silverware after joining Enzo Maresca’s Blues from Premier League rivals Brighton

Joao Pedro says Chelsea are determined to rule the world – and prove they can win the biggest trophies again. He admits the Club World Cup is huge for Brazilian clubs as they prepare to face Fluminense in the semi final in the MetLife Stadium on Tuesday.

But Pedro insists it also means the world to Chelsea as it will be a chance to show they are back among the elite and want to win major silverware as well as pocketing a £97m jackpot for the eventual winners. Chelsea won titles, ruled Europe and lifted countless trophies under Roman Abramovich but now Pedro is part of a new era trying to bring a new period of success to the club.

Brazil striker Pedro, who started his career with Fluminense, said: “Every club wants to be world champions and we have a game to prove ourselves and hopefully we can be in the final.

“I think Chelsea is a big club and my dream was always to play for a big club and to win trophies. Chelsea have a great team, a young team and I think that’s why I came here.

“Playing in the best league, for a better team, a bigger club, a team that fights to win. I think it’s been a great start, and there’s still a lot to come.

“I think in Brazil, the Club World Cup is very important because normally the teams who play there don’t play teams from Europe so for us it’s very important.

“For me also, I will always take this tournament seriously and that’s why I am here because this tournament is very important for me.”

Pedro also revealed that he will not celebrate if he scores against his old club in the semi-final.

He added: “No, I don’t think so. It’s not about trying to end anyone’s dream, but I have to do my job. I need to do my work.

“Of course, I’m very grateful for everything Fluminense has done for me, but I can’t stop doing my job.

“I don’t know how things will play out — anything can happen. I know how much it means to Fluminense, and I believe it’s just as important for us too. So, may the best team win, and may it be a great match and a great show for everyone.”
