Newcastle chiefs discuss shock Ollie Watkins transfer amid Arsenal and Man Utd interest

Newcastle are among the Premier League clubs looking for a new striker this summer and they have floated the idea of making a move for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins

Newcastle are the latest club to consider a move for Ollie Watkins with Arsenal and Manchester United also keeping the Aston Villa star in mind amid their search for a new striker.

Watkins, 29, emerged as a target for Arsenal back in January when the Gunners were looking for a new No 9. And while a deal was not struck at the time, the England star was a target again this summer, though Arsenal are now in advanced talks over a deal for Viktor Gyokeres.

United are also admirers of Watkins, who has years of Premier League pedigree and a fine goal record at Villa.

And it has now emerged, via The Mail, that Watkins’ name has also surfaced at Newcastle following the departure of Callum Wilson.

The Magpies want a new frontman to compete with Alexander Isak and both Watkins and Yoane Wissa of Brentford have been ‘discussed’ by the club recently.

The report goes on to add, however, that it remains to be seen whether Watkins – or Wissa – would have the appetite to come in and compete with Isak, who is the club’s undisputed first-choice striker. Both would also likely cost a significant sum and at the ages of 29 and 28 respectively, neither Watkins or Wissa would have much sell-on value.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another striker liked by Newcastle and is a free agent after deciding to leave Everton at the end of his contract. Intriguingly, he is also understood to have been offered to Manchester United.

While Arsenal’s move for Gyokeres makes a swoop for Watkins unlikely, United are considering their No 9 options and could yet make a move for the Aston Villa frontman.

Newcastle are currently closing in on a £55million deal for the former Manchester United winger, Anthony Elanga, but are light in attack after Wilson confirmed he would be leaving St James’ Park after five years after failing to agree a contract extension.

In a statement, he said: “It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon. Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

“All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts.

“Thank you for the memories. CW9.”
