Wigsley Old Airfield fire: Firefighters tackle huge blaze at former RAF site

A huge fire continues to burn through the night at former RAF Wigsley, built between 1941 and 1942 as a satellite base for the Royal Air Force – there are still buildings from the war on the site

Fire crews have been called to a huge blaze that started overnight at a former RAF site.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Wigsley Old Airfield at around 1.25am this morning following reports of a fire involving hay bales and standing corn.

A spokesperson for the fire service took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an updat from the scene, it read: “We are currently dealing with a large fire at Wigsley Old Airfield involving around 12,000 tonnes of hay bales and standing corn.” They also confirmed that seven fire engines along with the water bowser are in attendance.

Photos shared courtesy of Group Manager Leigh Holmes, who is att the scenee, show the extent of what firefighters are currently dealing with. The cause of the fire has not yet been established and it is unclear is any injuries have been reported at this moment in time.

RAF Wigsley was built between 1941 and 1942 as a satellite base for the Royal Air Force. RAF Wigsley was operational from February 1942 and closed in July 1958. There are still buildings from the war on the site.
