Potatoes won’t sprout at all for months if left in one unusual location

By staff13 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Potatoes are a staple in most households, but if not stored properly, they can go to waste. A simple hack can keep them free from sprouts for longer – and all you need is an apple

Potatoes are infamous for their culinary flexibility – think mashing, baking, frying, boiling, or roasting – but improper storage can lead to tragic waste. This is how you can save some pennies, and a trip to the store.

Luckily, experts at Wheeldon Brothers have divulged a nifty tip that could extend the life of your spuds for “months”. They shared: “Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last.”

This hack has picked up steam on social media and is all down to the magic of ethylene gas, which apples release naturally, reports the Express. Further insights from the specialist reveal: “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes.”

To achieve peak longevity, the expert advises: “For the best results, combine this method with proper storage and keep potatoes in a cool, dark and dry environment.” Once relegated to the cupboard, spuds are now advised to chill out in the fridge for maximum freshness, potentially tripling their shelf life.

The expert explains: “Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research shows that fridge storage is safe.”

Mindfulness is key, however, as they add: “It’s important to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins.”

A final word of caution is offered: “Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten. To keep your potatoes in top condition, store them properly and check them for any signs of spoilage.” Another method to prolong their freshness is to bin any plastic bags, which trap moisture and accelerate spoilage.

As written in the North London Waste Authority, potatoes are the most wasted food item in the UK. Approximately 4.4 million potatoes get thrown away every day, costing UK homes £230 million annually.

One of the main reasons potatoes get wasted is that they’ve gone bad. Also, because people choose not to eat certain areas of the potato, such as the skin. This also contributes to its large amount of wastage.

Thanks to this hack of storing potatoes in their adequate space, and next to apples, this will stay fresher for longer. Over time, this trick will save some money and an unnecessary last-minute trip to the supermarket.
