Three steps to keep your lawn looking lush and green even in dry weather

As the heatwave continues, many gardeners are looking for ways to keep their lawn looking lush and green. But a gardening guru has revealed the three simple steps to keep your grass vibrant and healthy during the summer months

Your once-pristine green lawn can rapidly become patchy, burnt and withered in dry and hot weather. The conditions put grass under enormous strain by stripping away vital hydration and compromising root systems, making it susceptible to infestations, illness and parching damage.

Even the most robust lawns can find it challenging to maintain their lustre when the mercury climbs and precipitation dries up.

The feared hosepipe restrictions typically follow extended spells of sweltering weather and minimal downpours, yet this needn’t spell disaster for your greenery or turf, reports the Express.

Following recent scorching conditions across Britain, green-fingered enthusiasts might be frantically seeking solutions to rescue their lawns. David Wilson Homes has teamed up with horticultural expert Lucie Bradley to share guidance on preserving your grass during extreme heat. She delivers achievable and environmentally-conscious strategies to maintain your lawn’s health and vibrancy all summer long.

1. Utilise grey water

This includes water from bathroom sinks and showers, kitchen sinks, and leftover bath water, as long as they’re free from harsh chemicals or pollutants. An additional environmentally-conscious approach to irrigating your turf involves employing a water collection barrel to gather and reserve rainfall, which can subsequently be utilised in the garden without expense.

2. Water during morning hours

Avoid watering late in the evening as leaving your lawn damp overnight can increase its vulnerability to disease.

3. Mulch

Mulching helps recycle nutrients back into the soil and aids in moisture retention by slowing down evaporation-induced dryness.

Nevertheless, this last method must be put into practice prior to severe heat arriving, since cutting grass during sweltering conditions ought to be prevented.

Lucie recommends: “During these periods, grass plants are under a lot of stress and may not recover from mowing. Instead, wait until the temperatures cool down and for at least 24 hours after rainfall or watering.”
