‘I’m a pilot’s wife – avoid removing shoes during security checks with two tips’

By staff21 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

It can be daunting getting stopped while going through security and being asked to remove your shoes. But now a pilot’s wife shared her top tips to make this a whole lot easier

An air traveler places his shoes in a bin before passing through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security check at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on February 20, 2014 in Los Angeles, California. The TSA recently launched a PreCheck program that allows those enrolled in a trusted traveler network to enter about 100 US airports through a special security lane where they dont have to take off shoes, belts and jackets or remove laptops, liquids or gels. We all know travelling is a fun and thrilling experience. But for many people, going through security can be quite a headache, especially when you’re asked to remove your shoes and go bare food.

However, there can be a way to complete the process without having to take your footwear off, according to one pilot’s wife who shared her top tips. We all know the system can be gross for people who are concerned about the cleanliness of the floor at the airport. Laurie is a travel expert based in Houston, US, and she has plenty of information to share on her Instagram.

She recently suggested two important tips for anyone who is stopped by TSA, Transportation Security Administration, and asked to hand over their footwear.

1. Clean your feet with an antibacterial wipe

Most tourists don’t have access to showers at the airport – and attempting to use a sink might earn you some strange glances from fellow travellers.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t freshen up. Packing antibacterial wipes is always a good idea if you’re travelling.

You can quickly disinfect your soles if you have to walk through security barefoot, which only takes a few seconds and won’t delay your journey.

Even better, the antibacterial wipes can be used to wipe down areas of the cabin that haven’t been cleaned thoroughly.

The window, tray table, and TV screens are all a good idea to give a once-over if you want to avoid germs.

2. Bring an extra pair of socks

Even when wearing socks while going through security, it can feel quite unpleasant having to drag them across a dirty floor.

It’s also less than ideal if you’ll be travelling in those same socks throughout the entire day – as they’ll remain grimy for that duration.

Laurie offers two solutions to address this problem, explaining: “Wear a pair of ratty old socks through the TSA line and toss them when done.”

Alternatively, pop the messy socks into a plastic bag and wash them when you reach your destination.

Laurie’s post has received more than 1,000 likes since being shared earlier this month – with many expressing appreciation for the guidance.

One follower raved: “Always the best tips!”. Meanwhile, another concurred and commented: “Very good tips.”
