DVLA sale means you can get personalised number plate this week

By staff24 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The DVLA is auctioning off customised number plates this week, and you could get your hands on one matching a registration with special significance to you if you’re the highest bidder

The DVLA is putting up a selection of customised number plates for auction this week, offering drivers the chance to snap up a plate with personal meaning if they come out on top in the bidding war. An expert has shed light on how some drivers are using these legal licences to make a statement and potentially secure an investment for the future.

Carl Hanley, who runs JDM Plates – a top supplier of legally compliant and custom number plates – commented: “With personalised registration plates continuing to rise in popularity, this week’s DVLA online auction is another opportunity for UK motorists to secure standout plates that fuse identity, style and long-term value.”

Among the bespoke plates going under the hammer this week are:

  • 599 A – £2,500 (all starting bids)
  • 400 BEN – £1,200
  • 33 GEM – £1,200
  • 212 LEE – £800
  • 292 SAM – £800
  • ALF 5IE – £300

Mr Hanley said: “The DVLA auction system is accessible for anyone interested in owning a unique plate. All the lots are listed online at dvlaauction.co.uk, where buyers can easily browse, register, and bid entirely online.

“Once you’ve registered, you can set your maximum bid, then track your favourites throughout the seven-day window, giving both collectors and first-timers a fair chance at success.

“With over 2,000 plates released at each auction, and bids this week starting from just £70, the format makes once-premium symbols of status now achievable for a variety of motorists.

“What’s especially exciting is how number plates have evolved into a form of self-expression. Whether it’s initials, a nickname, a business name or something tongue-in-cheek, we’re seeing more people than ever using their cars as an extension of their personalities.

“This surge in interest isn’t about vanity, it’s driven by creativity, status, and in many cases, the long-term investment potential of rare or exclusive combinations.”

Mr Hanley also highlighted the growing demand for private plates as a reflection of broader lifestyle trends. He stated: “People want ways to stand out without modifying their vehicles in ways that are costly or potentially void manufacturer warranties. A personalised plate offers instant impact.

“With the DVLA releasing a finite number of desirable combinations every 8 weeks, auctions like this one are hotly anticipated by buyers looking to get ahead of the curve.”
