Brit drowns on Greek holiday after boat stops to let passengers go for swim

By staff25 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The unnamed 75-year-old was pulled from the sea after he went swimming on Ammoudi Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia on Wednesday morning – his boat had stopped to let passengers enjoy the water

A British tourist has drowned on holiday in Greece after the boat carrying him let passengers off for a swim.

The 75-year-old, who is yet to be identified, was on a boat trip off Ammoudi Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia when the captain let passengers off to enjoy the water.

After diving into the sea, fellow passengers noticed he was unresponsive, so they pulled him back on to the boat – where he was given first aid.

The vessel returned to the Port of Fiskardo and he was taken to the Sami Health Center in Kefalonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead, according to Kefalonia Magazine.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of his death.

It comes after another elderly Brit was found dead on his sun lounger at a popular Greek beach after reportedly falling ill.

The 74-year-old was discovered unconscious on Stalis Beach on the isle of Crete by other people at the resort at around 12pm on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and made a desperate bid to revive the man, but unfortunately their efforts proved unsuccessful.

It is understood that he had first gone for a swim before returning to the sun lounger and there are reports he had a “strong feeling” of sickness shortly before his death.

Paramedics from Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) treated the man at the scene and no cause of death has yet been given by the Greek authorities. An autopsy is now being carried out, said cretapost.gr.

It comes after several tragic beach deaths over the last few months involving British citizens on holiday. A 73-year-old man was found dead on a beach in Agia Paraskevi, Skiathos, in Greece.

A lifeguard was alerted, but the man could not be saved, despite a doctor attempting to bring him around for 40 minutes.

And a 68-year-old lost his life after going swimming and losing consciousness on June 12. Officers from the Central Port Authority rushed to Lindos beach in Rhodes and took the man to the nearby Archangelos health centre, where he was pronounced dead.
