Beautiful UK beach is ‘one of Europe’s busiest’ because of golden sands and crystal waters

Bournemouth beach, in Dorset, is one of the most popular beaches in the UK but it has also been branded as one of the most ‘complained about’ in the whole world

A cherished UK seaside destination, renowned for drawing masses on bright days, is one of the busiest in Europe – which may be something of a double-edged sword.

Bournemouth Beach, frequently celebrated for its splendour, is perhaps the most recognisable of all the beaches that dot Britain’s 7,700 miles of coastline. Due to its position on the South Coast, it is often one of the hottest parts of the country, meaning it’s become a go-to destination for newspaper photographers looking for a heatwave snap whenever the mercury begins to rise.

It’s also a big favourite of the British public. Although figures vary significantly, between seven and 11 million people visit Bournemouth each year, and many of those head to the beach. That’s in no small part thanks to its length. The beach stretches seven miles along the coastline, delivering a vast area of golden sand for sunseekers to kick back, play beach games or generally lark about on.

Despite its massiveness, Bournemouth Beach can get crowded. In fact, a study by the Thinking Traveller found that it was the second most overcrowded in Europe, based on its 764 Tripadvisor reviews which mention ‘too busy’. It was only trumped by Elafonissi Beach in Crete, which inspired 940.

The cleanliness standards at Bournemouth Beach have similarly faced criticism, with 31% of reviewers voicing dissatisfaction. Expressing their frustrations, one guest remarked: “I have been to Bournemouth many times and have enjoyed it. On this occasion, I have never been so dismayed.

“I have never seen so much rubbish left behind by the people using the beach. Food, plates, wrappers, bottles, towels, plastic bags and the list goes on. I think the council need to get their act together and start patrolling the beach and either educate or fine these litterers heavily. It’s a dump.”

However, not everyone held such a dim view of the seaside spot.

One holidaymaker gushed on TripAdvisor: “Beautiful sandy beach, probably the best in the UK! With the sunny weather we are having at the moment it is nicer than Spain! The kids had a swim and the water was not too cold. Altogether, Bournemouth is a perfect family seaside escape destination. We plan to return this summer.”

A second reviewer remarked: “Great beach to visit. Loads to do including: aquarium, shops, pier and food venues. Lifeguards available on the beach. Clean and tidy layout, nothing negative that we found. Great facilities close by, would highly recommend.”

Meanwhile, a third person enthused: “This is certainly one of the best beaches I have visited in the UK. We were blessed with beautiful weather so it was just lovely to stroll across the sand.”
