Instagram’s most viral plants look great but are extremely dangerous for your pets

By staff1 August 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Experts have revealed a list of viral Instagram plants that can prove to be potentially dangerous to pets residing in your home — especially dogs and cats. Read on for the full list.

In today’s chronically online day and age, we’d be hard-pressed to find individuals who are off social media in its entirety.

People sharing their carefully manicured lives on social media platforms has become the norm, rather than the exception. Trend after trend is eagerly embraced, with each user’s profile vying to outshine the next.

And while most of these trends are harmless and a bit of fun, there are some that can be dangerous. One such hot topic surging in popularity these days is viral Instagrammable plants. It comes after the ‘UK’s most dangerous plant’ leaves toddler in A&E with second-degree burns

While posting stylish pictures of your home adorned with beautiful, lush plants has gained traction, an expert has cautioned that many popular houseplants can be toxic to pets and pose serious health risks if ingested.

Research carried out by home décor website RiversWallArt.com identified the most common houseplants and succulents on Instagram by analysing the number of hashtags for both the scientific name of each houseplant and the more commonly used names. They then cross-referenced this with information about which plants are safe for homes with pets residing in them.

Tony Gilbert, Founder & CEO of RiversWallArt.com weighed in on the findings, remarking: “These findings reveal which plants are the most visually appealing, according to social media users, and can offer inspiration for those looking to style their space.

“However, it’s important to remember that not all houseplants are pet-friendly. If you share your home with a dog or cat, opting for pet-safe plants, or even plant-themed wall art, can give you the same lush, green aesthetic without putting your furry friend at risk.”
