Brits leaving so much waste from inflatibles it could ‘encircle the world twice’

Brit tourists are using so many inflatible lilos that the waste generated could encircle the world twice, researchers have found, despite their general wish to be more responsible

British travellers abandon 54.5 million inflatable lilos every year, enough to stretch around the world twice if laid end to end.

A study revealed that sunseekers leave behind a staggering 20.9million tonnes of plastic waste, with inflatables one of the most frequently discarded “buy and bin” items.

Around 36% of holidaymakers admit dumping them after a single use with lilos, flamingo rings and unicorns often left behind. Top reasons for discarding them include limited suitcase space (27%), punctures (19%), lack of use at home (17%), and the faff of deflating (12%), according to the study commissioned by London Luton Airport. But there are signs that attitudes are changing with 72% wanting to be more environmentally-responsible and 61% open to buying “pre-loved” holiday items. Around 83% would consider donating unwanted inflatables at the end of a trip.

In response the airport has launched the LLA Lilo Exchange where passengers can pick up pre-used inflatables before flying out, then drop them off on return in exchange for a free fast track security pass for their next trip.

The exchange will run from August 1 to 14 and has a range of items including lilos, rubber rings and the odd inflatable dolphin or crocodile, while stocks last, offering responsibly sourced options for both adults and children

Clare Armstrong, head of guest experience, at the airport, said: “We’re thrilled to launch the LLA Lilo Exchange this summer which is a fun and environmentally responsible way to highlight our simple and friendly passenger experience.

“Inflatables are one of the most loved holiday staples and, contrary to the belief of nearly half (45%) of passengers, deflated inflatables are allowed through airport security.

“Our Lilo Exchange aims to provide a fun way to encourage people to travel more responsibly by bringing back unwanted inflatables, so that other holidaymakers jetting off from LLA can do the same.”

An estimated 2.5 million are set to fly from Luton this summer, with Jet2 operating from the airport for the first time. To celebrate sunseekers have the chance to win a seven night holiday for four to the four star Enotel Lido Resort in Madeira. The prize also includes free Fast Track security passes. Complete this form to be in with a chance of winning.

Top 10 most abandoned items on holiday revealed:

  1. Sandals / flip flops / beach shoes (32%)
  2. Sunglasses (24%)
  3. Beach towels and mats (22%)
  4. Books (20%)
  5. Sun hats and caps (18%)
  6. Swimwear (16%)
  7. Inflatable lilos (12%)
  8. Snorkelling sets (12%)
  9. Travel games (cards, compact board games) (11%)
  10. Inflatable pool / beach toys / pool rings (10%)
