A man alleged to have threatened and assaulted members of the public while carrying a knife and being naked from the waist down has been arrested, police have said. The man was said to be in Malmesbury at around 1pm today, according to Wiltshire Police.

Reports indicate he was walking down Bremlihan Road and Bristol Street in the town. Due to the proximity to the town centre, police said there are likely a “number of witnesses and potentially more victims we haven’t yet spoken to”.

Det Supt Angela Shipp said the matter is being treated “incredibly seriously”. She said: “We appreciate the significant amount of community concern that this incident will have caused.”

No serious injuries were reported following the incident today. The man was given medical treatment at the scene, the BBC reported. He is now in police custody.

In a statement, police said: “We have arrested a man and are appealing for possible witnesses and victims to come forward following an incident in Malmesbury town centre this afternoon (02/08).

“At around 1pm, we received a report of a man naked from the waist down in Dark Lane carrying a knife. It is understood that he has travelled on foot on Bristol Street and Bremilham Road and assaulted and threatened members of the public with the knife.

“Officers swiftly attended the scene and arrested the man on Bristol Street. He was provided with medical treatment at the scene and is currently in police custody.

“There have been no reported serious injuries.”

Police said officers would remain in the town centre as further enquiries were carried out. Victims and those who witnessed the incident are urged to contact police on 101, quoting a ‘log 141’ and August 2.

“If you have any concerns then please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our officers,” police said.
