Beautiful European country with walkable cities tops list as cleanest in the world

By staff9 August 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Estonia has been named the cleanest country in the world, due to its incredibly low emissions and clean air – but it’s also a great spot for a holiday

If you’re yearning for a getaway that’s free from the madding crowd, where the air is pure and the streets are spotless, then this European gem, crowned as the world’s cleanest country, might just be your ideal destination.

As per The Air We Breathe report by the World Population Review, Estonia has emerged as the nation with the freshest air and the least emissions.

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which evaluates aspects such as greenhouse emissions, CO2, progress towards carbon-negative status, methane, enforcement of environmental policies, expansion of forests, renewable energy sources, and rainforests, has placed Estonia at the top of the list.

The study revealed Estonia to have the most pristine air and the highest global EPI score, standing at 75.3.

Other European nations making it to this prestigious list include Luxembourg (75), Germany (74.6), Finland (73.7), United Kingdom (72.7), Sweden (70.5), Norway (70), Austria (69), Switzerland (68), and Denmark (67.9), reports the Express.

Interestingly, Estonia, United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Austria, Norway, and Switzerland have consistently held their positions in the ranking of the world’s cleanest countries since 2020.

For those considering a trip to Estonia, a visit to its capital, Tallinn, is a must.

The entire city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, thanks to its remarkably preserved 13th-century Old Town, brimming with spires and original structures.

The Old Town is divided into two unique areas: the Upper Town, or Toompea, which houses the Estonian government in the charming medieval pink Stenbock House and the 800 year old Toompea Castle, and the Lower Town.

Toompea is a limestone hill in the central of Tallinn’s Old Town and is home to the Government of Estonia and the Riigikogu (parliament) as well as famous city landmarks such as Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Toomkirik.

For those planning a visit, the Pikk Hermann Tower, a part of Toompea Castle standing 150ft above sea level, is a must-visit. The breathtaking views are sure to leave you speechless, and if they don’t, the 215-step climb to the top certainly will.

If you’re keen to explore this stunning city for yourself, Skyscanner currently offers flights from London to Estonia in September for a mere £88 return.

Tallinn’s top attractions include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Kadriorg Art Museum, and Kadriorg Park.
