A grieving wife has paid tribute to her “always smiling” husband who died while staying at a seafront hotel. Khuram Ahmed Hussain booked in at the Grand Burstin in Folkestone after falling ill.

The next day, emergency crews were called after the 31-year-old collapsed in his room. Desperate efforts were made to revive him, but he died at the scene on January 18. Last week, an inquest was opened into the father-of-two’s death, with a coroner saying the cause currently remained a mystery.

Khuram’s wife has paid tribute to the former CitySprint delivery driver, a dad of children aged four and nine. “He was a good father,” said Viktorija Vizgaudaite, 32. “He spent all of his free time with the children.

“Khuram was there for the kids, his family and people he didn’t know. He was a very good person who was loved by the community, always helping everybody and always working as hard as he could. Khuram was very caring. Whenever anybody needed help, they would call him in the middle of the night and he’d go out.”

She says Khuram’s funeral in Peterborough, where he lived, was very well attended. They had never seen so many grown men crying for someone they had lost,” she added. “He was a very smiley person and was always smiling no matter what.”

Viktorija says Khuram was on his way to Belgium to pick up a kitten from a friend, and was set to pick up the keys for his new car dealership when he returned to the UK. Coroner Katrina Hepburn opened an inquest into his death at Oakwood House in Maidstone on Friday morning.

She says the 31-year-old left Peterborough on January 17 en route to Belgium but started to feel unwell. His wife booked him a room at the Grand Burstin, which he arrived at shortly before midnight. The next day, concerns were raised for his welfare.

He was discovered in the bathroom of his hotel room in peri-arrest – a medical term used to describe the period just before or just after a person suffers a cardiac arrest. CPR was attempted but he died at the scene.

The coroner says Khuram’s medical cause of death is unascertained, meaning mystery surrounds how he died. The inquest was adjourned until November 21.
