Man attacked in Croydon ‘falls into path of oncoming van after being pushed’

A man, aged in his 40s, was rushed to hospital having been hit by a van in Croydon, south London, after allegedly being pushed into the road during an argument

A man fell into the path of an oncoming van after he was allegedly pushed in an argument and he is in hospital with serious injuries.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said that that they believe the man, aged in his 40s, was a victim of an assault before the collision with the vehicle, which led him to stumble into the road in Croydon, south London. The unnamed man was rushed to hospital following the incident in the heart of South Croydon on South End at 4.10pm on Saturday (August 16) and he has suffered “potentially life-changing injuries”.

The van driver spoke to officers at the scene and was not arrested, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.

Pictures from the scene showed about a dozen police and ambulance vehicles responded to the incident near South Croydon station, while an air ambulance was also sent to the scene.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to get in touch with the police. A force spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 4.10m on Saturday, August 16 to reports of a road traffic collision in South End, Croydon.

“A van was in collision with a 40-year-old man who was taken to hospital where he remains with potentially life-changing injuries. Enquiries are ongoing, however at this time officers believe the injured man was the victim of an assault prior to the collision which may have caused him to fall into the path of the van.

“The driver of the van was spoken to by officers at the scene. He was not arrested. Anyone with information with could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5026/16Aug.”

Many people were at the location on a busy Saturday afternoon and saw the events unfold, with lots TAKING to social media to wish the injured person well.

“Didn’t look good walking past, poor man hope he makes a speedy recovery,” said one person, another stated: “I just seen this myself and it looks quite bad, looks like firemen also there, praying for those involved.”

While a further comment read: “All buses diverted we were on the 466 and it went the 403 route near the Croham arms. I Hope everyone involved is OK.”
