Don’t cook rice in boiling water and use expert’s ‘better’ way instead

By staff19 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Many people are unaware of one important ingredient that they should be adding to their rice to make it taste better – and it’s not salt, according to a culinary expert

Culinary expert Andrea Vaughan, the founder of Homemade for Elle, has unveiled what she swears is the superior method for cooking rice. As she explains, it takes more than simply boiling rice in water to bring out its flavour.

Indeed, whilst packet instructions typically advise placing rice in a saucepan of water before bringing it to the boil, Andrea has explained that this process misses out a crucial ingredient.

Although home chefs may naturally assume that a good pinch of salt is the key to a flavoursome portion of rice, Andrea has a different suggestion, which could well elevate your cooking. Now she’s let foodies in on her game-changing “little secret”. It comes after a mum claimed ‘I accidentally named baby after dog food brand and I don’t know what to do’.

As previously reported by the Express, Andrea shared: “If you happen to love salty, bold, and vibrant flavours, I have a little secret to share with you. “Instead of boiling your rice in water, try cooking rice with chicken broth.”

This common kitchen essential provides a more robust taste thanks to the herbs and seasoning already present in the stock. To ensure the chicken stock blends properly with the rice, it’s recommended to stir the chicken stock into the boiling water until it completely dissolves.

You can then proceed to cook the rice as usual, whilst keeping a watchful eye to prevent the rice from burning. It couldn’t be easier.

How to cook rice

Initially, fill your saucepan with the desired amount of rice, then rinse the rice with water. Place on the highest heat setting and allow the water to reach a rolling boil.

Add the chicken stock cube and stir until fully dissolved. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, cover the pot, and allow the rice to absorb the water (and stock) for 15 to 20 minutes.

Andrea promised: “The chicken broth will leave your rice moist, salty, and for such a simple substitution. Your friends and family will be wondering how you made such tasty rice.”

And you don’t have any stock cubes to hand, then there are other everyday grocery items which can give your rice a boost, including butter, minced garlic and rosemary.
