Brits warned not to use bright coloured suitcases at the airport

Brits have been warned that one common suitcase habit could actually mean your bag gets picked out by thieves as an easy target – but there are alternative hacks that can help

Brits packing for holidays are being warned to think about their suitcase choices carefully, as a common mistake could actually make your bag a target for thieves at the airport.

There are plenty of packing tips out there, such as one hack that helps you get 30 outfits in one suitcase, and tips on how to maximise the space you have. However, once your bag is packed it’s all about keeping those belongings safe so your holiday doesn’t kick off on a bad note.

It’s not just about adding extra protection such as a wrap or a padlock; one travel expert has warned that a plain suitcase may actually be a better shout even if it can be trickier to spot on the carousel.

Their warning comes after airport workers revealed a trick that could mean your bag is more likely to come out on the carousel first.

Andrea Platania, a travel expert at Transfeero, says that too many travellers mistakenly think that an eye-catching suitcase is a smart choice because they can see it quickly, and it’s also easier to describe in the unfortunate event that your bag goes missing.

However, it could actually make your bag an easy steal for criminals. “A bold suitcase might look fashionable, but it catches the eye of the wrong people,” Andrea explained. “If you really want to travel securely, go for something ordinary, or even a little worn. It doesn’t draw attention and it doesn’t advertise what might be inside.”

Of course that doesn’t mean you need to ditch any personalisation. Small ribbons, stickers or other markets can help you spot your bag or distinguish it from the masses, without making it an obvious win for thieves. Andrea added: “It’s about balance. You want to recognise it instantly without making it look like treasure on wheels.”

If you’re worried about your bag going missing and that’s why you want an easy one to describe to staff, then one simple solution is to simply take a few photos of your bag before travelling. Shots of the front, back and any unique details or stickers can make life much easier if you need to file a police report or insurance claim, or if you need to fill out the dreaded ‘lost bag’ form at the airport while staff try to track it down for you.

If you’ve got a colourful suitcase then you don’t need to instantly get rid of it. Instead, Andrea suggests buying a cheap, plain-coloured cover that you can put over your bag. Not only does this tone down loud designs, but it could help keep it protected against scuffs and scrapes. “It’s a win-win,” Andrea added. “It looks ordinary, but it keeps your luggage in better condition too.”
