Contractors’ horror ‘human remains’ discovery while working on home extension

Builders carrying out luxury renovations on a UK home were left stunned when their work came to a chilling halt – after they uncovered human bones buried deep in the cellar.

The shocking discovery was made on Friday afternoon on Cleveland Road in Lythan, Lancashire, where constrcution crews had been busy transforming the modest terraced house into a plush modern property complete with a cinema room and games lounge. Police were quickly called to the scene, and Crime Scene Investigators swept into the usually quiet residential street. All building work was immediately suspended while officers combed the area and began trying to piece together how the remains ended up beneath the property.

Initial enquiries suggest the grim find is less a murder mystery and more a macabre piece of local history. Detectives believe the bones may be linked to an old burial site that once stood in the area, long before the rows of houses and nearby railway line were built. Maps from the mid 1800s show the house was built on the site of an old bowling green.

By the end of the century, the land had been repurposed, with terraced houses built in its place as the railway network expanded through the Flyde coast. Unaware of the ground’s past, the current homeowners had submitted ambitious planning applications earlier this year.

Blueprints filed in May show proposals for a lavish extension boasting a new basement living space, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. The plans also included sliding doors opening out onto the garden, plus the creation of entertainment spaces such as a dedicated cinema room..

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We received a report that builders completing work on a property in Cleveland Road, Lytham St Annes had found what appeared to be bones, at 12:37pm on 15th August.

“Work is ongoing to identify the remains, which have been confirmed to be human; however, our enquiries so far have led us to understand that this is thought to be a historical burial site, isolated to the property. Whilst we are keeping an open mind, there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

“If you do have any information that could assist our ongoing enquiries, please contact 101 quoting log 0616 of 15th August.”
