Daidys Pena Garces was left fighting for her life after the Brazilian butt lift, which involves taking fat from the hips, abdomen and other areas via liposuction before injecting it into the buttocks
A woman can no longer walk, talk or feed herself after a botched Brazilian butt lift operation.
Daidys Pena Garces’ procedure was allegedly carried out by an unqualified surgeon and, weeks after it, she suffered a pulmonary embolism that caused severe brain damage. This has left the 50-year-old woman unable to walk or talk, her husband Jorge Fernandez said.
Mr Fernandez, who has effectively become his 50-year-old wife’s carer, has now filed a lawsuit. He said: “She was my first, like my first love… [Now] she never more will talk or walk or eat by herself.”
A Brazilian butt lift, known as a BBL, involves taking fat from the hips, abdomen and other areas via liposuction before injecting it into the buttocks. Ms Garces, whose procedure was carried out in Miami, Florida, claims she was not made aware of the risks associated with the surgery.

Although experts have long warned of the dangers of BBLs, which can prove fatal, recipients insist on proceeding with the surgery in the hope to get a bigger, more pert behind.
Ms Garces fell unwell after her procedure in May 2023 and, after months in hospital, the outlook appears bleak. Her husband’s attorney, Lavenia Santos, told WSVN: “This pulmonary embolism occurred because of this surgery… Garces would not have undergone the high-risk plastic surgery procedure had she known that the surgeon was not a trained and board-certified plastic surgeon.
“The woman has no idea that she is not being cared for by a board-certified plastic surgeon. That’s just wrong. If the public knew that, they probably not be so willing to go, regardless of price. What happened to her shouldn’t happen to anyone.”
But in Florida, there is no legal requirement that a doctor be a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform a Brazilian butt lift.
A GoFundMe page has been created for the Miami couple to help Ms Garces perform day-to-day activities she now struggles tio carry out. Her home may need to be adapted to help her manage her challenges.
The page reads: “Daidys required emergency medical care and was hospitalized for seven months due to the pulmonary embolism… Now, Daidys is unable to perform any activities of daily living without assistance. Along with facing an extended recovery process, she is now burdened with growing medical bills and ongoing treatments.”
