Gorgeous tropical island is ‘just like the Maldives’ but ’10 times cheaper’

By staff22 August 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

This Southeast Asian island is being compared to the Maldives but ten times cheaper, the tropical island offering travellers the same sandy beaches, and bright blue water for an affordable cost

The Maldives is often everyone’s dream destination to tick off the bucket list – but with costs often sky-high many do not know if they’ll ever get to their tropical paradise.

But this alternative hidden gem located in Southeast Asia might provide just that – the white sandy beaches, crystal-clear ocean, bright blue skies and once in a lifetime experiences – and it won’t be costing an arm and a leg.

The lesser-known location in the Philippines guarantees you the luxury Maldivian experience without the costs weighing you down. Palawan, which is often called the “Maldives of the Philippines” has been garnering widespread attention from those budget-friendly travellers and thrill-seekers.

A travel expert from the Experience Travel Group shares why Palawan is a hidden gem. The natural beauty of the island, the gorgeous lagoons, dreamy beaches, the huge limestone cliffs and wondrous coral reefs. This can all be enjoyed due to Palawan’s authentic tropical experience available to all. Those visiting can get involved in the local culture and take part in all the adventurous activities: island hopping, kayaking, snorkelling and diving.

A spokesperson from the travel group explains: “Palawan has a unique combination of natural beauty, adventure, and affordability. Travellers can enjoy many of the same experiences they would in the Maldives, such as pristine beaches and turquoise waters, but at a fraction of the cost. It’s becoming increasingly popular among travellers who want a tropical paradise experience without overspending.”

The comparisons drawn between the two islands is because of various similarities: the turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and the marine life. The Maldives is known for their overwater villas, but Palawan has beachfront resorts and guesthouses offering magical views without the costly prices.

Experience Travel Group also comment on this: “Palawan may not have the overwater villas of the Maldives, but its natural beauty, clear waters, and abundant activities make it a comparable destination for travellers seeking a tropical paradise at lower costs.”

Accommodation on Palawan is also another plus as it’s affordable. The beachfront accommodations are within any budget ranging from £25 to £70 per night, depending on which season you visit. Mid-range resorts may be £80-£150 per night, which all in all is vastly cheaper than the Maldives, which often, their similar accommodation starts at around £400 per night.

Dining on the island is also cheap and cheerful. They offer fresh seafood, grilled fish, coconut desserts and tropical fruits for just a few pounds per meal. Whereas, the Maldives food prices are a lot more.

Those wanting to take part in activities like exploring lagoons and hidden caves by island-hopping, or kayaking, snorkelling and such are reasonably priced and travellers can enjoy these activities without having to pay extortionate prices.

To get to Palawan for UK travellers, it will typically need a connecting flight. Flights from London Heathrow or other major UK airports can be made to Manila, before a domestic flight is taken which would take around two hours to Puerto Princesa, or one hour to El Nido Airport.

From the airport, Palawan’s main sights can be reached, by tricycle, motorbike or a small boat. Renting a bicycle or motorbike is the best way to travel between beaches, lagoons and restaurants and is most affordable.

Experience Travel Group explain why it’s worth visiting: “For those who want to experience a luxurious beach holiday without spending thousands, Palawan is an excellent choice. It’s perfect for couples, solo travellers, and families alike.”

Top activities to in Palawan
  • Island hopping in El Nido – Explore hidden lagoons, immaculate beaches, and clear waters.
  • Snorkelling and diving in Coron – Discover shipwrecks and striking coral reefs.
  • Kayaking in lagoons – Kayak through serene, turquoise waters surrounded by limestone cliffs.
  • Honda Bay island hopping – Visit gorgeous small islands and sandbars.
  • Nacpan Beach – Sunbathe on one of the longest stretches of white sandy beaches in the Philippines.
  • Underground River tour – Explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

Do not miss out on these experiences to have an unforgettable holiday.

For first-time visitors some more tips are:

  • Visit in the dry season (March to October) for sunny hot weather and calm waters
  • Immerse yourself in the local culture, exploring traditional festivals, cuisine and arts and crafts
  • Multi-day tours for full island-hopping experiences
  • Rent a motorbike or bicycle to conveniently explore the island’s hidden spots and beaches

If your daydreaming away about the Maldives but the nightmare costs are putting you off, consider Palawan in the Philippines as a great alternative. The beautiful beaches, thrilling activities and affordable living should entice travellers to visit this cheaper tropical paradise.

Palawan offers the best of both worlds: adventure and tranquillity. Experience Travel Group concludes by saying: “Palawan proves that luxury doesn’t always have to come with a luxury price. It’s an ideal destination for those looking to explore paradise without compromise.”
