‘Hidden gem’ Cornwall beach: A secluded snorkelling spot undiscovered by tourists

By staff22 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

This Cornwall beach is always quiet and is a great spot for some peace and tranquillity, especially if you’re looking for a hidden gem of a beach away from the crowds

As the mercury rises across Britain and schools remain closed for the summer holidays, there’s no doubt about it – Cornwall’s stunning beaches are under siege. But fear not, peace-seekers, we’ve discovered a hidden treasure that’s far from the madding crowd.

This tucked-away beach on the eastern flank of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall is known for its tranquillity and is a top spot for snorkelling.

Stumbling upon this secluded cove nestled along the Cornish coastline is unlikely, as the coastal path diverts around the nearby quarries at Dean Point and Porthoustock, bypassing this idyllic location. Unbeknownst to many visitors, this secret jewel is perfectly situated between the two quarries.

Leggan Cove is a breathtaking, largely unexplored beach that’s ideal for a family day out, particularly with little ones. With a relatively easy and accessible walk to the beach, there’s no need to risk life and limb clambering down steep cliffs and rocky paths to reach this hidden treasure.

The sand at this beach is an unusual coarse grey, which only serves to highlight the surrounding crystal-clear blue sea. It also boasts several rock pools for children to explore, reports the Express.

The tranquillity of Leggan Cove may be attributed to its remote location – a fair trek from the nearest car park in the quaint village of Rosenithon. This is widely believed to be why the beach retains its serenity, even during the bustling summer months.

Nestled on the sheltered eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula, Leggan Cove is framed by gently sloping cliffs. The sea here is also relatively calm, making this secluded spot perfect for snorkelling and swimming.

For those who prefer to keep their feet dry, the cove’s rock pools, which become visible at low tide, offer plenty of fun.

This sandy haven welcomes dogs all year round, but with no lifeguards on duty, visitors and their furry friends are urged to take care. With no facilities at Leggan Cove, beachgoers are advised to bring along their own snacks and other essentials for a day of seaside fun.

Just over a mile offshore from Leggan Cove lurks the barely submerged Mannacles reef. These treacherous rocks have sadly claimed the lives of over a thousand people throughout history.

The coastal path near Leggan Cove diverts around the quarry at Porthoustock, so visitors are recommended to follow the footpath from the charming village of Rosenithon rather than seeking a direct alternative route. Rosenithon is just over half a mile east of St Keverne.

The footpath from the hamlet centre is the only route to the coast. After a left turn, it meanders alongside a stream through fields towards the neighbouring Godrevy Cove.

Leggan Cove, a picturesque spot, nestles to the left of Godrevy Cove and can be reached either by crossing the sand at low tide or clambering over rocks when the tide is high.
