Moment man abandons puppy at airport after being told he can’t take it on plane

By staff22 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Shocked staff at Hercilio Luz International Airport in Brazil discovered a three-month-old puppy had been abandoned by his owner who wanted to go on holiday. Police are investigating the matter

Staff at a busy airport were left stunned when a man abandoned his puppy in a carrier and hopped onboard a plane.

The owner ditched the three-month-old pup after he was told he couldn’t take it onto the aircraft at Hercilio Luz International Airport in Florianopolis, Brazil. Shocking footage showed the man carrying his dog into the car park and placing the carrier between two vehicles. He was then recorded heading back towards the airport on Wednesday.

Security camera footage shows the man carrying the dog in its crate into the car park. He then places the carrier between two cars before walking away and heading back to continue his journey. Staff discovered the furry animal and alerted the cops. The animal was taken into care, before police launched an investigation.

Police confirmed that the owner had got on a flight to Brasilia, where he planned to connect to another flight to Manaus. The Civil Police of Santa Catarina and the Federal Police notified the Department for the Animal Protection Department in the Federal District.

When the plane landed in Brasilia, officers boarded the aircraft and arrested the suspect. Police said the man admitted abandoning the animal. He explained that he had sold his family’s possessions to return to Manaus and, after being prevented from boarding with the dog, decided to leave it at the airport, reports DailyGoat.com.

The man is being held on suspicion of animal cruelty, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine, and a ban on keeping animals. Authorities confirmed the puppy is doing well and has since been adopted by an airport employee.

It comes after a dog was dumped in its crate in Wirral, Merseyside. The dog, thought to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross called Spud, was found with a note alongside his crate. The owner described Spud as a “really loving house dog” but admitted they could not “give him the life he deserves”.

They explained that they had tried to re-home him for weeks, but without success, and apologised “for resorting to this”. Animal Rescue Officer Lucy Welch of the RSPCA’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital said: “Spud is a lovely, gentle natured dog.

“His overgrown claws are an indication he’d probably not had enough exercise. They were growing into his pads which were red and sore – possibly from urine staining – and he would have been left feeling very uncomfortable.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the person who found Spud and took him to a place of safety, to Jackson’s Animal Rescue for kindly transporting him for initial treatment, and to the veterinary teams who provided wonderful care.”
