A holidaymaker shared her shock after making an unexpected observation when visiting Cornwall for the first time – and she doesn’t understand why nobody is talking about it
A tourist has shared her astonishment after spotting something rather unexpected during her first ever trip to Cornwall. The woman was excited to explore the county’s stunning sandy shores and dramatic clifftops for her summer break – but it was the locals and other tourists who truly caught her attention.
Posting on Reddit, she revealed: “I’m on my first holiday to Cornwall, enjoying it very much but there’s something that I’ve noticed and I’ve searched about it and there’s nobody talking about it – there is an insane amount of redheads. especially at beaches.”
She explained that encountering someone with ginger hair is quite rare in her everyday routine, despite residing in Britain’s most densely populated region.
The woman continued: “I only notice this because I am one too, and living in London I’ve been a minority my whole life, here I can’t turn a corner without seeing them!”
But the visitor says it’s a delightful discovery as, being ginger-haired herself, she’s finally experiencing what it’s like to “fits in for once”.
She remarked: “I also find it really surprising because I don’t even see this many ginger people when I visit my family in Ireland.
“Makes me think we may not actually be a dying breed. It feels weird actually fitting in for once.
“I’m just shocked because obviously the stereotype is if your ginger your Irish, maybe Scottish.

“I’ve seen more gingers in Newquay than I have in my whole life. Nobody talks about it!”
One user commented on her post, saying: “Celtic countries have the gingers, Cornwall is a Celtic place, quite a few in Cornwall, but not as many as Scotland and Ireland. Also they tend to stick out and be noticeable from a distance.”
Another redhead joked: “I know you’re lying because gingers don’t go to the beach.”
A third chimed in: “Go to Iceland. I’m reasonably tall for a woman and often feel a bit like a red headed Gulliver, but in Iceland I felt like I’d found my tribe.
“Tall, lots and lots of redheads, more than I’ve ever seen in Ireland. Wonderful place for lots of reasons, but especially, for me at least, because of that.”
Another user added: “If your staying in Newquay the chances are the ‘gingers’ are also on holiday there.
“There is no way of knowing when the area you’re staying is a hotbed for tourists.
“As someone living here I haven’t noticed any difference in numbers, if anything blonde is the main colour here because of the sun and sea.”
Finally, one user questioned: “How many of them are natural gingers though? It’s hard to tell these days!
“Are they dyed gingers or biological gingers? Lots of people using those fake freckles and pale makeup so you can never be 100% sure.”
