Crystal Palace risk losing frustrated Oliver Glasner for free after rejecting world-record bid

Much like captain Marc Guehi, Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace contract is also up next summer and after recently snubbing RB Leipzig, few would now blame him if he wanted to explore his options

Last summer, Bayern Munich were prepared to pay £15.5million to land Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner. The figure would have represented a world-record fee for a manager, surpassing the reported £15m package Chelsea paid Brighton for Graham Potter in September 2022.

Steve Parish held firm and his hard-nosed stance paid off spectacularly as come the end of the season, the Austrian had fired the Eagles to FA Cup glory. On the eve of Palace’s Premier League opener at Chelsea, Glasner was once again forced to answer awkward questions over the futures of captain Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze, who has now joined Arsenal in a £67.5million move.

Much like Guehi, Glasner’s contract is also up next summer and after recently snubbing RB Leipzig, few would now blame him if he wanted to explore his options. Palace’s historic FA Cup triumph was supposed to represent a platform to build upon.

Instead, the club have spent just £2million on two signings – second-choice goalkeeper Walter Benitez and back-up wing-back Borna Sosa.

There is a firm possibility Palace could yet lose Guehi after Parish publicly encouraged bids for the defender after the Community Shield triumph over Liverpool. Glasner deserves better and that’s without even considering Palace’s shambolic demotion to the Conference League.

Palace face Norwegian outfit Fredrikstad FK on Thursday night in the second leg of their play-off, holding a narrow 1-0 first-leg lead, and they have already lost Eddie Nketiah and Daichi Kamada to injury in recent weeks. Their squad will be significantly stretched as they tackle the demands of European football.

Palace need to back their boss or they risk losing him. Much like Marco Silva at Fulham – his achievements warrant investment but both managers are being left dangerously short in the market.

To make matters worse for Glasner, he has had to sit back and watch Nottingham Forest, who have taken Palace’s spot in the Europa League, not only tie down their captain Morgan Gibbs-White to fresh terms but also embark on a spending spree.

In the past few days, Forest have made progress on a raft of deals for James McAtee, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Omari Hutchinson and Douglas Luiz.

Evangelos Marinakis isn’t to everyone’s liking but nobody can fault his ambition. Palace haven’t exactly sat on their hands – they’ve made an approach for Leicester’s Bilal El Khannouss and have been linked with a move for former loan star Conor Gallagher, who’s currently playing in Spain with Atletico Madrid.

But the lack of progress on new arrivals has been majorly concerning. If they’re to kick on again this season, they must get their act together quickly.
