Man sneaks into bar to use toilet – and gets nasty surprise from the owner

If you’re looking to use a bar or pub toilet without purchasing something, you might want to think again, as one unlucky visitor was handed an unpleasant surprise when he attempted it

When a man was left needing to use the bathroom, he found a bar toilet to relieve himself, but was left with a nasty surprise as the owner hit back at the unwelcome visit.

Wandering around a city and feeling the sudden urge to go can come with the tricky task of finding somewhere suitable, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with the area or don’t plan on stopping for a leisurely lunch. Many dash to the nearest pub or bar in a bid to slip to the toilet without being noticed, even if they don’t plan on purchasing anything during their short visit.

For those in the hospitality industry, this can become increasingly frustrating as members of the public take advantage of their facilities without giving anything back.

And one bar in Ulverston finally had enough and charged one man the privilege of using their bathroom.

The Ignition cocktail bar, in the heart of Ulverston town, took to Facebook and shared a photo of a bill they imposed on the gentleman after he used their toilet without buying anything. The bill was handed to the brief visitor, which stated his product at the bar as “taking a s**t tax” and he was sensationally charged £10.

The caption accompanying the photo said: “It’s hard as it is in hospitality but when someone who never has come into our venue goes straight up to our toilets to take a [poo emoji] then try walking out without buying a drink, I’m done & sick of it keep happening. Water rates still apply to us!

“So I asked the gentleman if he wanted to pay cash or card, his preference was contactless. So that cheeky s**t cost him £10.00! Please be warned, I’m off on one today.”

The post was met with a mixed response, but some people agreed with the swift action taken. One said: “Fair play, looking forward to visiting again (but brief visits to the toilet) in 2 weeks.”

A second penned: “I’ve always said…. If you use a pub/bar toilets at least buy summit even a packet of crisps… you’re using the facilities so least buy summit and put some money behind the till!”

A third noted: “That’s what you get when the public toilets aren’t open or people don’t have cash on hand to pay to use them.”

Although some saw the charge as a little steep, as one asked: “How do you know he didn’t have a medical condition? Which required him to use the toilet urgently such as bowel problems?”

In response, the bar wrote: “That’s a point, what about asking us first? Isn’t that the right thing to do?”

Another noted the same issue: “What if they had a medical issue? I have to use toilets all the time- and it has to be the nearest and easiest one.”

While one more offered advice to the bar and said: “You realise by signing up to Ulverston public toilet scheme you can get a £500 grant. You’re not giving yourself good publicity here. Sure that would cover the extra flush and toilet paper.”
