Sarah Glen, 39, was sexually assaulted by her friend’s husband David Devine in East Renfrewshire while their children were upstairs – he has been jailed for six years

A woman who was raped by her best friend’s “monster” husband has bravely waived her right to anonymity in a bid to encourage other victims to speak out.

Sarah Glen, 39, was sexually assaulted by David Devine, 44, inside his family home in Busby, East Renfrewshire, in December 2022. His wife had invited Sarah and her children round after hearing about the breakdown of her relationship.

But when the wife went upstairs to check on all of their children, Devine pounced on Sarah and overpowered her on the sofa. After he carried out the depraved assault, his mortified wife came downstairs and pulled him away from her.

Devine was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting Sarah at the High Court in Edinburgh, reports Daily Record. He was jailed for six years on Thursday. Speaking after sentencing, Sarah, a mum-of-three, said: “There are no words to describe what this monster has put me through.

“I had not long since split up from my husband and at the time, I was devastated and vulnerable. My friend invited myself and my children over to her home so she could offer me condolences.

“At one point, she went upstairs to see to the children and we were left on the sofa. That is when he raped me. I kept telling him no – it felt like I had told him no a million times – but he just carried on.

“I didn’t want to shout and scream because there were children in the house. When my friend came back downstairs, she found him on top of me and pulled him off of me. I should have been in a place of safety – my friend invited me round to talk about my marriage breakdown but in his mind, he saw that as an opportunity to assault me.”

She added: “I’m sharing my story to remind other victims that no matter what you want for yourself, you should speak out to protect others. This man attacked me in his own home with children and his wife present. He is a dangerous individual and other people deserve to know what he is capable of.

“My life has been torn apart by what he did to me, but just hearing the judge sentence him validated me and no longer makes me feel like I want to bang my head against a brick wall.

“The process was long and daunting, but if I hadn’t done it, there would never have been justice. If I didn’t speak up, I could have allowed him to prey on someone else.”

Rape Crisis Scotland chief executive Sandy Brindley said: “We are grateful to Sarah for choosing to speak out about her experience to help other rape survivors. Survivors who decide to report what has happened to them not only have to deal with the trauma of being raped, but the devastating reality of the criminal justice system.”
