‘I visited the UK’s most northerly island chain and found one insane beach’

By staff27 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Travel vloggers Joel and Emilia, who run the ‘Joel and Emilia’ YouTube channel, recently took a trip to the UK’s most northerly island chain – and discovered an “insane” beach

Two adventurous travel vloggers, Joel and Emilia, stumbled upon an “insane” beach during their journey to the UK’s most northerly island chain. The pair, who document their globetrotting escapades on their popular YouTube channel with a following of 264,000 subscribers, recently set off for the UK’s northernmost point.

Situated approximately 100 miles from the northeast coast of mainland Scotland, the picturesque Shetland archipelago comprises over 100 islands, including Unst, the UK’s most northerly inhabited isle.

In their video, titled ‘The REAL TRUTH of the UK’s most Northerly ISLAND’, Joel and Emilia are seen embarking on a road trip with their mates to explore the Shetland mainland, with plans to camp on a secluded beach they later labelled as “insane”.

Emilia shared: “We’ve freshened up after a little morning swim, and we’ve got a bag full of food because we are heading out on an adventure, got the car packed, and we are going to be camping tonight on a remote beach.”

Joel chimed in: “It’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Scotland, not just here in Shetland.”

Setting off to the south of the island, the group of friends crossed over an airport runway, something Emilia described as “crazy”, as they travelled to the most southern tip of the Shetland mainland.

Spectacular scenery across the Scottish island formed a stunning backdrop as the group paused for some wildlife spotting, particularly the vibrant-beaked puffins.

Finding one on the side of a cliff, the pleased group could be heard saying it was “so cool” and “so cute” before travelling further to a separate but “incredible” beach with water that was “so clear”.

Subsequently, they spotted three charming seals basking on the sand before continuing to their camping location. Upon reaching the shore, they immediately voiced their enthusiasm.

Emerging from their car, Joel exclaimed: “Whoa, this beach looks insane, like this is Scotland; this isn’t the Maldives”.

During their approach, Emilia observed that the beach “actually looks insane”, with both remarking on its impressive proportions.

The YouTubers then showed aerial shots of the landscape, which appeared to be St Ninian’s Isle beach, a large sand causeway (known as a tombolo) linking the island to the South Mainland.

Situated in a farming region and a short distance from the township of Bigton, this stunning beach is reportedly a common sight in promotional material for Shetland.

Additional attractions across Shetland encompass hiking, cycling, boating, angling, golf, activities like kayaking, surfing and climbing, plus historical locations including Clickimin Broch, Jarlshof, and Old Scatness.

Shetland is also a wildlife haven, home to seals, puffins, otters and harbour porpoises. And if you’re lucky enough to visit between May and August, you might even catch sight of orcas, white-sided dolphins or even a minke whale.
