Trainers are a staple in many of our daily wardrobes, whether we’re heading to the gym, work, or out and about. Consequently, when we invest in a brand-new pair, they seldom stay pristine for long.
The part that always seems to bear the brunt of wear and tear first is the white rubber rim around the sole, often found on shoes such as Converse, Vans and Vejas.
When this happens, your new shoes instantly appear worn and scruffy, which is far from ideal—especially considering the hefty price tags attached to footwear these days.
Thankfully, fans of Mrs Hinch have once again come to the rescue with a popular solution that can make your shoes look like new again.
This easy hack was shared on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, where thousands of cleaning enthusiasts offer help and advice to others grappling with household challenges, reports the Daily Record.
One woman recently sought advice from the group on how to keep her shoes looking clean and fresh. She said: “Good afternoon. Can anyone recommend a way to make the dirty white look white again on my vans, please? Thank you.”
Sure enough, the picture she posted showed her Vans with a grubby tinge around the white rubber soles. Thankfully, though, her fellow group members were quick to offer cleaning solutions, with one definitely proving more popular than the rest.
One person suggested: “Toothpaste, scrub with an old toothbrush,” while another echoed: “Whitening toothpaste leave on a while then wash off.”
One person quipped: “Toothpaste is good also with a brush! And if someone in the family is annoying you that day, use their brush!”
Better Homes and Gardens concurred with this quirky tip, advising in a blog post: “Use an old toothbrush and white toothpaste to scrub dirt and grime out of almost any kind of shoes.”
The group members didn’t stop at toothpaste for their cleaning hacks; one member recommended: “Spray Elbow Grease on a magic eraser and they’ll come up like new.”
Magic erasers are dense melamine sponges that are cheap to buy and often only need a little water to achieve impressive cleaning results around the house.
Another shared their own method: “I put mine in a net bag in washing machine at 20 degrees come out clean.”
And yet another added a different approach: “I saw somewhere else cotton wool and nail polish remover.”
