Supermarket expert names perfect time for yellow sticker shoppers to get a bargain

A supermarket expert has revealed the ‘prime time’ for shoppers looking to bag a bargain as he shares when each supermarket put out their yellow sticker products

It’s no secret your grocery shopping can get expensive which is why so many people look out for those magic yellow sticker items. However it can be hard to time it right to get first dibs on the yellow sticker items when they are put out.

Savvy shoppers will time their shopping with when certain supermarkets roll out their yellow sticker deals, but according to one supermarket expert, there are specific times for each store.

You can make up to 90 per cent savings on items, and with shoppers seen fighting over reduced foods in the past, David Holmes, CEO of WhatPrice.co.uk, has revealed the exact time you need to visit in order to bag a bargain.

The expert revealed each store has its own strict schedule for marking down items that are nearing their sell-by-dates and said the biggest price cuts happen during specific timeframes hen managers need to clear stock fast, which is usually late afternoon or early evening.

According to The Sun, Holmes said: “Most people spot yellow stickers while shopping, but hardly anyone knows there’s a science to when they appear. Knowing exactly when to visit each supermarket could save families hundreds of pounds on their grocery bills.”

Tesco

Tesco can start as early as 8am, but the serious savings happen around 7pm in the large stores and 4pm at Tesco Express. He said they use a “step-by-step” system as morning discounts may only be around 20-30% off, but towards the evening the price slash can be up to 90% off on fresh products that would otherwise be thrown away.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s yellow stickers aren’t as frequent as Tesco’s according to Holmes who revealed the first price reductions will start to appear around 1pm but said to not “expect much”, while the best money saving will be around 7pm when discounts will be up to 75%.

Asda

For Asda, the expert said they do “one big round” of reductions in the evening at 7pm rather than throughout the day. He revealed the fresh food can be cut by 50-70% if you turn up around the right time.

Morrisons

According to Holmes, Morrisons is the best for those looking for some real savings. He said the first yellow stickers are put on shelves around midday, but the biggest cuts are between 5pm and 7pm for the final reductions of the day. David commented: “The fresh food counters at Morrisons are gold mines for yellow stickers. The fish, meat, and deli sections can see huge reductions in the evening.”

Aldi and Lidl

The two bargain supermarkets work slightly different to the rest when it comes to discounted food. Firstly, instead of yellow stickers, they use red stickers, and they will be put out first thing in the morning rather than towards the end of the day like the rest.

Lidl starts their discounts at 7am while Aldi start from 8am. Holmes said this is because their products already sell quickly due to the low prices, so they reduce at the start of the day rather than the end.

Waitrose

Waitrose begin their mark downs from 2pm, with the last of the discounts on shelves from 6pm onwards and shoppers can save up to 80%.

Co-op

Co-op usually put out their discounted foods an hour before closing. However the expert said it always varies depending on each different store.
