A man and a boy have tragically died after a car mysteriously drove off the road in South Tyneside, authorities have said.

Northumbria Police rushed to John Reid Road in south Shields shortly after 8.55pm last night after a report of a one-vehicle collision involving a white Skoda Octavia. An investigation has been launched, but at this stage the force hasn’t yet confirmed what caused the car to drive off the road.

John Reid Road remains closed in both directions today as investigations are underway and officers carry out enquiries. Nearby Brockley Avenue, a residential area, has also been cordoned off.

The emergency response involved the police, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance as well as Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Chronicle Live reported. A man in his 40s and a secondary-school-aged boy were found to have suffered serious injuries and were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers, Northumbria Police said. A man in his 30s sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he remains in a stable condition. He has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the road traffic incident last night. A spokesperson for the service said: “We dispatched four ambulance crews, one critical care paramedic, one advanced practitioner, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, three HART resources (Hazardous Area Response Team) and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to the RVI hospital by road for further treatment.”

As the police investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision continues, officers have urged any witnesses to get in touch. Sergeant Steve Armstrong, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of both the man and the boy who died in this tragic collision.

“We continue to offer them all of the support we can at this devastating time. Our investigation is under way and we would ask anyone with witness information to get in touch.

“That includes anybody who has dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision. Your information could help us piece together exactly what happened and provide answers for the loved ones of those who have sadly died.”

Anyone with information or footage should get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the force’s website. Those unable to make contact in these ways can call 101. Please quote reference number: NP-20250830-1121.
