Simple 50p trick every driver should do before getting in car as September arrives

September’s forecasted wetter weather makes this quick and easy coin trick especially urgent, offering an easy way to stay safe, legal and avoid unnecessary expenses

For many UK motorists, MOTs come with fears of failure, fines and high costs — yet a quick and simple check with a 50 pence piece could prevent pricey problems.

Tyres are among the most important components on any vehicle, providing grip, stability and braking power. But they are also expensive to replace and vulnerable to wear and tear.

UK law requires tyre tread depth to be at least 1.6mm across the central three‑quarters of the tyre. Driving with tyres worn beyond this point leaves road users’6 at risk of accidents, MOT failure and potential penalty points if stopped by police.

Experts from Number1Plates explained: “Many drivers underestimate how quickly tyre tread wears down. Even tyres that look okay at a glance can fall below the legal limit. A quick check can prevent expensive repairs or failed MOTs.”

The 50p trick is an easy way to check tread depth. Simply place the coin into the main grooves and if the tread does not cover the inner rim, then the tyre is below the legal standard. The check takes seconds, costs nothing more than a coin and is widely recommended as a simple way to monitor tyre condition.

Number1Plates’ expert said: “The beauty of the 50p check is that it’s quick, easy, and safe. Drivers can do it themselves in minutes, spotting worn tyres before they lead to MOT failures.”

Neglecting tyre condition can prove costly. If a car fails its MOT for worn tyres, the bill for retests and replacements can range from £45 to £100 depending on the garage. Beyond that, tyres with poor tread reduce braking performance, increase the risk of aquaplaning and can lead to higher insurance costs in the event of an accident.

Number1Plates warned: “Tyres are not just a legal requirement — they are a safety issue. A small investment of time and 50p can prevent hundreds of pounds in fines and repairs, not to mention the risk of accidents.”

Experts recommend combining the tread check with regular inspections. All four tyres should be examined, since wear can be uneven. Visible cracks, bulges and cuts should never be ignored, while monthly pressure checks improve safety and fuel economy.

Motorists are also advised to rotate tyres occasionally for more consistent wear. They should also remember that ageing tyres, even with good tread, may not remain safe beyond six years.

Number1Plates added: “This little 50p check could save you money at MOT time, prevent fines, and most importantly, keep you safer on the road. It’s an easy habit that every driver should adopt — it only takes a minute, and the peace of mind is priceless.”

Adam Jones, Legal Expert at HD Claims, highlighted how the season can make this even more pertinent: “Worn tyres drastically increase stopping distances on wet roads, raising the risk of skidding and aquaplaning. At this time of year, when sudden downpours can turn a journey dangerous in seconds, tyre safety is critical.

“Drivers often only think about winter tyres when the first frost arrives, but September’s rain can be just as dangerous if your tread depth isn’t up to scratch. A simple 20p coin test can give peace of mind — if you can see the border of the coin when placed in the tread, your tyres may be below the legal limit.”

September’s forecasted wetter weather makes the message especially urgent. So with autumn approaching, this quick coin trick offers an easy way to stay safe, legal and avoid unnecessary bills.
