Ryanair makes major change to baggage rules starting from today

Ryanair has introduced a new policy for its baggage allowance for passengers today and the change will be welcomed by many Brits

Ryanair passengers are in for a treat as the budget airline has introduced a new policy allowing travellers to bring larger carry-on bags through security.

The airline permits each passenger to bring one free carry-on bag on board, provided it fits under their seat. Those wishing to bring an additional carry-on bag will need to purchase this privilege via Ryanair’s Priority Boarding service. Passengers can now bring a personal bag measuring 40 x 30 x 20cm, a change that applies across all airports serviced by Ryanair.

Ryanair’s CMO Dara Brady announced: “From today (Thurs, 4 Sept) Ryanair’s new, bigger free carry-on bag is now 33% larger than the EU standard. Our bag sizers at all airports have now been “resized” to accommodate this bigger, free carry-on bag.”

He added: “All passengers wishing to bring a second carry bag can do so by availing of our Priority Boarding service, and passengers can also purchase check-in bags, should they so wish, during their booking process.”

Mr Brady concluded: “We hope our customers will enjoy these bigger, free carry-on bag sizes, but any passenger who fails to comply with these new generous limits, will be required to pay the checked in bag fee at the boarding gate.”

Ryanair has made a significant change to its hand luggage policy, allowing passengers to bring larger bags on board. Previously, the airline permitted a carry-on bag measuring 40 x 25 x 20cm with a volume of 20 litres at no extra cost.

However, the new rules increase this allowance to 24 litres. This means that Ryanair’s ‘personal bag’ allowance now exceeds the EU standard. The airline has been cracking down on passengers who attempt to bring oversized bags to the airport, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, revealed that around 200,000 passengers per year are forced to pay additional fees to stow their carry-on luggage in the hold. He expressed little sympathy for these “chancers” attempting to bring oversized “rucksacks” on board.

Speaking to the BBC, O’Leary stated that if passengers “comply with the bag rules then everyone will board faster” and there will be “fewer flight delays”. Alongside increasing the bonus per bag, Ryanair is also removing an €80 cap on how much staff can earn each month for catching passengers with oversized bags.

All Ryanair fares include one small personal bag, such as a handbag or laptop bag (40 x 30 x 20 cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you. If you require additional baggage allowance, various options are available.
