‘I’m a food expert and everyone should check the fridge for product that fosters mould’

By staff5 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

An expert has shared her top tips for keeping your kitchen clean and hygienic – and one common fridge item is a breeding ground for mould, here’s how to prevent this from happening

Proper food storage is essential for preventing mould and bacteria that could cause serious illness as well as protecting your family’s health. However, with numerous guidelines to follow, it can be puzzling to know where to begin and how to maintain a safe kitchen environment.

Melissa Kilcoyne, a business development manager at Virtual College – a provider of accredited food storage and hygiene courses – has issued a warning about one common fridge item that can harbour mould.

She explained: “The majority of condiments that haven’t been opened can be stored at room temperature in a cupboard, but once they have been opened, they should always be stored in a fridge.

“Shelves in the door are ideal for this kind of item, but otherwise you should store open condiments at the top of a fridge.” “Make sure to clear these out every few months, to ensure they are not producing mould spores, which become airborne.”

Tiles require weekly cleaning in busy areas as the grout dirt can become a breeding ground for mould and make your kitchen less sanitary, reports the Express.

The gaps between tiles can rapidly turn brown and mouldy, but the most effective way to restore cleanliness is using natural products you probably already have at home.

John Klee, an expert from Big Bathroom Shop, revealed a straightforward technique for cleaning tiles using just two natural ingredients. This powerful combination creates what he describes as the “best homemade solution” for maintaining spotless and fresh tiles.

He advised: “Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove tough grout stains, mould and mildew.

“Spray it on the affected area and leave for a few minutes and scrub with your choice of brush. “You may have to repeat this step if it’s a stubborn stain. No success? Make a baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste and apply to the grout lines, scrub and rinse with warm water.”

Follow these steps to ensure mould is not growing and creating an unsafe environment in your home.
