‘I’m a fashion writer and these M&S autumn jackets are on my wish-list’

As much as I enjoy summer, as a fashion writer when September hits, I’m itching to head to the shops and see what this season’s autumn and winter collections have to offer. Jackets are typically my first port of call as autumn weather often means being caught out in unpredictable weather so without delay, I set off to Marks and Spencer.

Marks and Spencer is one of my favourite brands – the quality of the clothing items has never disappointed me and in my opinion they last years. This means I’m willing to spend a little extra especially when it comes to a jacket or coat that I will wear time and time again.

The high street retailer has a number of trendy yet practical picks this year and while you can browse the whole collection, I tried on my favourite three to show you how they look and feel. From cosy fashion-forward coats to cool bomber jackets, these pieces of M&S outwear are all under £80.

Faux Fur Buckle Trim Coat

Last year’s buckle coat trend isn’t slowing down any time soon with the fashion-forward style appearing in many retailer’s new-in autumn and winter collections. I was instantly drawn to this black option from Marks and Spencer, thanks to the vintage gold-tone buckles and cosy faux fur fabric.

The coat is only available in one colour, black, however this is perfect for someone like me who commutes and would be wearing my coat on muddy walks. Priced at £75, it felt really soft and high quality, fastened with both poppers and the buckles. It’s certainly a coat that will keep you warm when temperatures drop.

Taking the jacket on and off does take a little time, so it’s maybe not one to reach for when rushing out the house, but I loved the way it looked and even received a compliment from someone in store. For me, this coat is a chic take on the trend and should see you through many seasons to come.

Those wanting a lighter version of the look can find a similar cream version at Next. The Ecru Cream Borg Duffle Fleece Jacket is slightly more expensive at £82, but shoppers say it ‘looks much more expensive than it cost’.

Suedette Lightweight Bomber Jacket

Dressing for the autumn absolutely requires a lightweight jacket option and a bomber is a cool way to tick this box. Even better, I spotted this suede option at Marks and Spencer for £40 and completely fell in love.

Suede is big news in fashion this season and while it might not be the most practical pick for rainy weather, it’s a timeless addition to any outerwear collection. This style is selling out quickly, but if you fail to get your hands on it, M&S also stock a Faux Leather Bomber Jacket in sage for £70.

This jacket was extremely comfortable and it looks great with light denim meaning it can easily slot into an existing wardrobe. The cuffed sleeves and baseball-style collar add a sporty touch and it can be worn casually or dressed up in an evening.

I’ve also got my eye on the Faux Suede Bomber Jacket from New Look for £39.99. It has a bubble hem, rather than a cuffed hem like the M&S option, making it a little less timeless. However, it does come in more colours – Stone, Tan, Brown and Khaki.

Faux Leather Lacquered Harrington Jacket

I wouldn’t normally opt for a lacquered jacket, but this £65 jacket from Marks and Spencer really stood out to me. The chocolate version is a similar choice if you can’t get your hands on it, or the leather croc option for £70 for those who want texture.

It’s designed in a regular fit and I would recommend sizing up if you don’t like anything too snug. The two front pockets were a welcome addition and it can easily be wiped clean.

I was surprised by how comfortable this jacket felt on and I loved the look of the statement silver zip. I would style with a skirt, boots and a brown suede bag for a chic yet practical autumnal look.
