A promising young footballer destined for a huge transfer to the MLS has tragically died in a devastating car accident, aged just 16. Éder Smic Valencia lost his life while on holiday.

The gifted striker was scheduled to travel to the US this week to reportedly put pen to paper on a deal with New York Red Bulls. He had caught the eye during February’s Under-16 Bulls Cup.

The fatal collision occurred in Guachené, close to Cali, Colombia, yesterday (7 Sept), reports the Daily Star. His passing was announced by his club, Academia Alemana Popayán (AAFP), which boasts a strong reputation for nurturing players with global prospects.

A spokesperson said: “It is with deep sorrow that we report the passing of our player Éder Smic Valencia Ambuila in a car accident while on vacation in Guachené. We are supporting his family and we will honour his memory here at AAFP. He will forever be in our hearts.”

Local media suggest Éder was also poised to pull on Colombia’s U-17 shirt for the 2026 South American U-17 Championship. The forward’s dream switch to MLS has been heartbreakingly shattered, leaving relatives, team-mates and supporters devastated.

Authorities continue to probe what caused the deadly smash. Emotional tributes poured in for the tragic youngster across social media.

One supporter wrote on X: “May God hold you in glory, Eder.” Another commented: “Strength to his family, friends, and team-mates.”

A third added: “Just a tragic story for a kid who was just 16 years old.”
