Aldi bosses have announced plans to close every one of its stores in the UK for three days later this year. It comes as colleagues are given the chance to spend part of the Christmas break with their families

The discount supermarket chain operates over 1,050 stores across England, Scotland and Wales – with plans to expand even more this to reach 1,500 locations. It has become a favourite among customers for its huge range of affordable products as well as its infamous middle aisle with constantly changing SpecialBuys.

The company announced today (September 10) that it would close its doors on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, December 25 and 26, before reopening shortly afterwards. An Aldi spokesperson confirmed that shops would resume trading on Saturday, December 27.

There will be another closure on New Year’s Day, Thursday, January 1, reopening once again on Friday, January 2, 2026. Stores will be open as normal between December 27 and 31.

Executives for the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket made the decision in line with previous Christmas plans, giving store colleagues the chance to spend time with friends and family. Opening hours will vary in the days leading up to Christmas, with Aldi operating extended hours to ensure customers can stock up ahead of the big day.

Rebecca Heley, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year. We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you.”

Other retailers have already made similar announcements this month and are making their staff and customers aware of festive plans. B&M announced it would be closing locations on Christmas Day before reopening on Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, Home Bargains put on its social media that its stores would remain closed for three days during the Christmas period. The discount store will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve and reopen on Saturday, December 27.

The decison was made in order to allow staff both Christmas Day and Boxing Day as rest days with their families. Branches will also shut on New Year’s Day, Thursday, January 1.

A Home Bargains representative commented: “Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we want to recognise that commitment. As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, particularly over the holidays. We’re proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season.”
