The famous seaside town is a popular spot for Brits looking to escape the UK’s colder months
A British expat has described his sunny seaside town as the “Newquay of Spain”. Nigel Pope, originally from Cornwall, has earned the nickname ‘The King of Benidorm’ due to his popular TikTok videos showcasing life in the Spanish resort.
He was asked which British resort the Costa Blanca town most resembled.
“I suppose, the nearest that comes to this has got to be Newquay in Cornwall”, he said..
“You know I used to go to Newquay a lot when I was younger and Newquay does seem to get the sunshine more than any of the other parts of Cornwall, along with St Ives and everything.”
Benidorm certainly enjoys its fair share of sunshine. Even in October, visitors can expect highs of 24C, according to airline TUI, reports the Express.
During the peak of summer, however, Benidorm often sees temperatures soaring into the 30s.
Although Newquay can’t quite match the scorching temperatures of the Alicante tourist hotspot, it shares a historic reputation for nightlife with Benidorm.
“Back in my day you had three big night clubs, you know you had the bars and everything and lots of tourists there, especially in the summer”, Nigel reminisced about Newquay.
However, in recent years, Newquay’s nightlife has seen a decline – unlike Benidorm.
Strict alcohol policies following drink-related deaths around 15 years ago have transformed Newquay from a raucous seaside party town to a much more mature tourist destination.
However, with its stunning beaches, coastal views and generally favourable weather, it certainly bears some resemblance to Benidorm
