Canelo Alvarez is earning ten times more than Terence Crawford in mega-fight

Canelo Alvarez will pocket more than $100m from his fight against Terence Crawford this weekend, with the Mexican superstar set to earn a staggering amount from the bout

Canelo Alvarez will earn more than $100million from his fight with Terence Crawford – while his rival banks £10m.

Alvarez will defend his four super-middleweight world titles at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday night – but will swell his bank account by an eye-watering sum whatever the outcome. UFC chief Dana White, who is promoting this weekend’s clash, had hinted at Alvarez earning a nine-figure payday earlier in the week, and that figure was put to the Mexican at Thursday’s press conference.

Alvarez quipped in reply: “Why are you lowering the bag? I’m fighting for more and you’re lowering it.” Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh then stepped in to declare: “No, you get the number wrong. The contract between us and Canelo [is] more than that.” Crawford then responded: “Congrats, Canelo”.

Alvarez penned a four-year agreement with Alalshikh earlier this year, just as he was poised to agree a clash with YouTuber Jake Paul. Alvarez faced William Scull in the opening bout of his arrangement and secured his showdown with Crawford following a dominant points victory in May. Alvarez will then complete his agreement with bouts in February and October next year, both of which are anticipated to occur in Riyadh.

Crawford, meanwhile, previously disclosed he will receive $10m from this weekend’s encounter, less than 10 per cent of his opponent’s purse. “I got $10 million for that fight [with Canelo],” told the Ring Champs podcast. “I’m doing it for the opportunity, baby, the legacy. The legacy outweighs the money. Three-time undisputed, ooo-wee coming soon. And I might go back down 154lbs and do it again.”

Alvarez, who is the favourite to win on Saturday, will be fighting in front of a crowd that supports Mexico. “I feel great. For me, this fight means a lot and I feel great. Ready. I can’t wait for Saturday night.

“I can’t wait for Saturday night and thank everybody coming to support the event,” he said. “This fight for me is big. It’s one of the biggest fights in my career. For sure it means a lot… this win is going to be in the very top.”

Crawford chimed in: “I think fights like this help the sport of boxing grow in the sense of having the best fight the best and it ain’t going to do nothing but make the sport better and the best is going to start fighting the best. It’s going to be stamped in the history books and the debate is going to be over.”
