‘I’m giving my son unique name but people say it’s so bad he needs saving’

A mum-to-be has shared the unique name she wants to give to her son – and some even said the moniker is so outlandish the little baby needs to be ‘saved’ from it

Picking out the perfect name for your baby isn’t always easy. You first have to decide if you want something classic or prefer to opt for a unique choice, and then you can start worrying about what nicknames your moniker might have, or think about how you might want to spell it.

But one mum has been urged to reconsider the name she’s chosen for her son, as people have told her she’s making a big mistake. In a post on Reddit, a family friend of the woman said the mum-to-be is planning on naming her son Jacob, but doesn’t want to spell it the traditional way.

Instead, the woman wants to call her child “Jeccub”, as she thinks it’s “unique” but won’t “throw people off”.

The mum’s friend shared text messages from the woman in her post, which read: “I was honestly thinking of Jeccub. Unique, but also doesn’t throw people off. What do you think?”

The friend then wrote in the post: “I told her I’d rather have her do Jacob or Jakob. I told her no. We have a group chat, and everyone agrees with my point of view. It sounds more like a nickname than an actual name. Am I wrong?”

Commenters on the post also largely agreed with the family friend, as many argued children need to be “saved” from being given a “bad name” by their parents.

One person said: “To answer the question. I think the name is horrible. Save the children from bad names.”

Another added: “Definitely throws you off. People who hear it won’t be able to spell it, and people who read it won’t be able to say it. Perfect!”

A third wrote: “You don’t want a common name? Fine, pick a less common or even rare name. But don’t f**k with the spelling. That won’t be unique; that’d be stupid.”

What are the laws on baby names in the UK?

If you’re planning on giving your child a unique name, you should make sure it complies with the UK law around names.

The UK has no comprehensive list of banned names, but there are some restrictions you should bear in mind.

You cannot give your child:

  • Offensive or obscene names
  • Names with numbers of symbols, such as James2 or @Victoria
  • Names that are misleading, such as title-based names like Queen or Lord
  • Names that are impossible to pronounce

According to the UK Deed Poll Office, names that are racist or considered to be harmful to the child could be illegal and banned in some parts of the UK.
