Driving can be a nerve-wracking experience for many people. There are so many things to remember on the road, from the Highway Code to even what those two ‘confusing’ lines on kerbs really mean.

Now we all know how important safety is, but despite it being crucial, many still cause trouble on the road like tailgating. One man recently dealt with not one, but four different motorists who were causing him grief from behind. He shared his frustration in a lengthy post on Reddit where he opened up about ‘jerks’ in a upload which scooped hundreds of upvotes and comments.

He said: “I ride a Suzuki sports bike as my daily drive and for a long time assumed the constant tailgating was just people being jerks about bikes, but I’ve been driving my roommate’s car for the last week and it’s just as bad, if not worse.

“Every time I’m on the road with a significant amount of cars on it, someone inevitably gets behind me and starts riding my a** like crazy.

“I drove 2 hours today and had FOUR different people tailgating me really badly.

“When people do this to me, generally I will just drop my speed to like 5-10 under in hopes that they pass me, try to roll my window down and wave them past, something like that, but more often than not, they actually refuse to pass me, much to my bewilderment.”

Continuing his frustration, he added: “If I didn’t know better, I would think they’re not tailgating because they want to go faster, they’re tailgating because they like to upset people.

“There is basically nothing discouraging people from doing this except that they might get in an accident, which they all just very clearly cannot comprehend.”

He labelled tailgating as a ‘huge problem’ and even claimed to never see anyone get pulled over for excessive tailgating which can be ‘dangerous’.

The motorist ended the post by claiming he ‘hates driving’ and finds it ‘extremely nerve-wracking’.

“But what would we even do about this? More tickets? This seems like a stupid solution,” he concluded.

“Frankly, I’ve got nothing.”

Tailgating is when a driver follows another vehicle too closely, making it difficult to react and stop safely if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly. This is a dangerous and illegal habit that can lead to accidents.

While there’s no clue as to where this driver is from but in the UK, tailgating is a careless driving offence which can result in a £100 fixed penalty fine and three penalty points.

The required safe distance is often referred to as the ‘two-second rule’, meaning you should maintain a gap that allows you to count two seconds between your vehicle and the one in front.

In rare cases, consequences can be more severe, including potential court action, larger fines and more points, as well as a driving disqualification.
