Phone call is still the most meaningful way to connect with someone, study finds

A poll of 2,000 adults found 55 per cent think giving someone a call shows they care about them much more than any other form of digital communication

Despite the rise of text messaging, over half of Brits still believe a phone call is the most meaningful way to connect with someone. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 55 per cent feel making a call shows more care than any other form of digital communication.

A whopping 84 per cent said hearing another person’s voice deepens their emotional connection, and 58 per cent who prefer voice calls enjoy sensing the tone and emotion of the person on the other end. Many also believe a good old chinwag on the phone with a loved one instantly lifts their mood.

Almost half reckon regular voice or video check-ins with those they care about would have long-term positive effects on their mental health and wellbeing.

Interestingly, the average adult spends roughly the same amount of time sending voice notes as they do on calls – around 25 minutes a day. This could be because 28 per cent of those who send voice notes find them useful for maintaining an emotional connection while being quicker than a call.

Laura Joseph, spokesperson for Tesco Mobile, which commissioned the research to encourage people to take action to stay connected ahead of 3G networks being switched off this year, said: “In our always-on, always-scrolling world, it can be easy to forget the power of a simple phone call.”

She added: “We want everyone to continue to enjoy those special moments as our network is upgraded. Our experts are on hand, both in store and online, to help customers make the most of 4G and 5G connections.

“Whether it’s checking compatibility or updating settings, we’re here to help everyone stay connected to the people who matter most ahead of the switch.”

Daily calls are made by one in ten to those they cherish, and 34 per cent ring a loved one several times a week. It was noted that these interactions leave most people feeling happier, more connected, and more loved.

With the complete shutdown of 3G networks by the end of 2025, one in five mobile phone users aren’t confident in checking if their device is compatible with the newer 4G networks.

Consequently, 33 per cent are worried about whether their friends or family members will be able to handle the transition, according to data from OnePoll.com.

Laura added: “As these changes will affect all mobile network operators, with some already well underway with removal of the 3G network, we encourage everyone using an older device to check they’ve got a phone that’s compatible moving forward, so you can stay connected.”
