Poundland announces major store closure update as it axes loyalty scheme

By staff16 September 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

The budget chain had previously confirmed it would close 68 stores as part of a major restructure, after being sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1

Poundland has today announced that 11 store closures, which were previously announced as part of its restructure, have been put on hold.

The budget chain had previously confirmed it would close 68 stores after being sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1. But in a new update today, Poundland has now revealed that 11 of these planned closures have been scrapped for now.

This includes Poundland’s Irvine Rivergate Centre location that had been due to close permanently on September 14. The Mirror recently reported that this store has now re-opened.

Further closures planned for October in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) have also been put on hold.

A separate store closure that was due to take place in Whitby will now been cancelled after Poundland was able to come to an agreement with the landlord responsible for this location.

Poundland said there is no change to its overall expectation that in time as leases expire, its number of stores will reduce to around 650 to 700 stores. Poundland had 800 branches at the beginning of its restructure process.

It will still close six stores on September 28 in locations in Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley and Uttoxeter. These closures are part of the original list of 68 stores that were earmarked for closure.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “We’re determined to deliver a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value to customers.

“We appreciate the support we’ve had from suppliers, landlords and other partners who’ve now all been fully briefed on our plans to get us back on track.

“While there is much work to do, I’m confident that a Poundland focused on the simple value our customers expect, has a bright future.”

It comes after the discount chain revealed it is rolling out a new simpler £1, £2, £3 pricing structure to its UK stores. By the end of the month, around 60% of grocery items will be at £1, while 20% will be at £2, and 20% at £3.

Examples of new £1 lines across grocery include Fox’s Chocolatey Rounds (130g), Cadburys Mini Fingers (96.5g), Lucozade Sport Orange & Raspberry (500ml), BIC Ladies Razor Aloe Pure (4pk), Wisdom Medium Toothbrush (3pk), Lotus Biscoff (12pk), Wagon Wheels (6+2pk), Domestos Bleach (750ml) and Johnsons Cotton Buds (200pk).

Poundland has also updated its website so that shoppers can only browse products – you won’t be able to buy anything online. Poundland is also closing its loyalty app, Poundland Perks, on this date.

Poundland Perks allows shoppers to earn points when they spend, which can then be converted into vouchers. You get 100 points for every £1 spent on qualifying items online or instore.

You need 5,000 points to get a £1 voucher to spend at Poundland. If you have vouchers that you’ve yet to spend, you’ll still be able to use these up until January 15, 2026.
