A couple from Yorkshire are “gobsmacked” after discovering a “hidden feature” behind a wall during part of their home renovation. Lots of people fantasise about revamping their home with a fancy renovation project, but it’s definitely a bold move.

Renovating a house is not for the faint-hearted, it can be very stressful, messy and expensive, but most who’ve been through it say it’s worth the effort. Many homeowners choose to share their renovation journey on social media.

One such couple from Leeds, West Yorkshire, bought a property that had been “derelict” for five years. They’re now in the process of transforming it into their dream forever home.

The pair were taken aback when they removed what appeared to be a fireplace cover, only to discover what could be an AGA hidden behind it.

They filmed their surprising find and posted it on TikTok where it quickly went viral, racking up more than 1.6 million views.

In the video, the man is seen using a claw hammer to pry the covering loose from the wall. The woman narrates and says: “This is going to be the biggest hidden feature.”

As the flimsy board comes away to reveal a cream heating appliance beneath, the man reacts with a surprised “ooh.”

The woman then excitedly adds: “It’s an AGA!”

In the caption accompanying the clip, the couple penned: “Not what we thought, really thought it would be a capped [off] fireplace”.

In the comments section, people were eager to share their thoughts. One person said: “Please make it a feature”.

Another agreed: “Omg that’d be amazing if you can get it up and running again”. A third said: “Lucky find. I hope you keep it and get it working. I’d love one in mine”.

Another person commented: “That’s a proper antique cooking range you have here”.

While another pleaded: “Update us with what you’re doing with it!! Be nice to see if fully working after all those years hidden”.

One more person shared: “I bought a house built in 1881. Lifted up the carpet and found a parquet flooring in two rooms. Still had its original bee’s wax on it.”

The couple responded: “Oh wow.. we just might find something similar…here’s hoping”.

Continuing the comments, another person warned: “Get it checked for asbestos if you’re keeping it better to be safe! Good find though”.

In response to many people’s confusion over the purpose of an AGA, one TikTok user clarified: “So many people are confused in the comments, it’s a basic cast iron oven, heated by whatever you put in the adjoining firepit. I grew up with this being used whenever the power went out, usually thanks to one of the farmers putting their tractor through the cables.

“Depending on condition/size/type, these can go for a pretty penny. Beautiful find, ours got replaced a few years ago”.

In a follow-up comment, the pair revealed they “were” and are “still gobsmacked” over their discovery, though they’ve not yet decided how to proceed with it.
