The reservoir and moorland offer a beautiful autumn day out for families looking for an outdoor adventure
For many adventure lovers, autumn is often associated with muddy boots and long walks. It’s a season for exploring the great outdoors without the worry of extremely hot or cold temperatures, although it’s always best to be prepared for a change of weather.
Once you’ve dug out your raincoat and packed lunch, it’s time to choose a trail. For anyone near the Peak District, there’s no shortage of choices. However, those looking for a family-friendly day out might consider Dove Stone Reservoir.
Found on the outskirts of Oldham, the beautiful moorland and reservoir look especially lovely during the autumn months. A recent video shared by TikTok user @softgirlswhohike shows just how beautiful Dove Stone looks at this time of year, as the leaves turn orange and begin to fall.
The post said: “You, me +dovestone reservoir in autumn?” The caption went on: “Pumpkin spice latte, autumn colours and beautiful views? I’m in.”
The Peak District National Park website says Dove Stone is ideal for families, with options for level, surfaced walks as well as more hilly climbs. It said: “Offering walks between 1.5 miles (30-40 mins) and up to 2.5 miles (1 hr) around the reservoir(s) or into the surrounding hills on longer routes, Dove Stone is also home to a Miles without Stiles path.
“A picnic area and easy access from a dedicated car park make this a great location for a family day out, however BBQs are not allowed at Dove Stone. A popular local spot, the car park can often be full by early morning.”
It does note that there is no permanent food and drink outlet, but depending on the time of year, seasonal hot food and ice cream might be offered by providers in the main car park.
The reservoir is popular on TripAdvisor, where it has received hundreds of reviews. One reviewer who visited in spring said: “Picture Postcard Views. What a beautiful part of the country. Fantastic views. Nice walk around the reservoir – you need walking boots if you are doing both reservoirs as very muddy in parts. Nice that’s there’s loads of tracks off to explore if you want.
“Toilets, ice cream van and a hot drink van on the main car park. Car park is only small so you need to get there early or you will have to wait for a space. £2 for 4 hours charge on the car park. Will definitely be back and would recommend.”
Someone else who visited in autumn wrote: “Stunning! Great walk with my dog will definitely make this a regular visit. Reminded me a bit of the Highlands.”
Meanwhile, a family who went in January said: “Beautiful walk! Never knew this place existed till today after googling local walks. Such a beautiful place with outstanding scenery and a lovely circular walk. My only suggestion is that it would be nice having a cafe there.”
Dove Stone is approximately six miles from Oldham and one mile from Greenfield. Bus services connect Greenfield and Manchester. The postcode is OL3 7NE.
