People are going wild for an exclusive new plate that is about to be released on 20 September in IKEA stores all over the world – however, not everyone is impressed by it.

IKEA recently launched an exclusive collection with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman, who is known for his colourful and ‘cheerful’ designs. The vibrant range includes items like plates, cups and bowls, as well as more decorative pieces like vases, candle holders, and a lamp that have been made to add a bit more fun to your dinner parties.

However, one item in the collection has received more attention online – and people are saying they’ve never seen anything like it before.

Taking to its official Instagram page on August 19, Ikea shared a sneak peak into the collection by sharing one of the 12 objects that are part of Gustaf’s collection.

In the first photo of the post, a hand can be seen holding a large blue tray with a smaller and thinner compartment on the inside. The vessel can carry 11 meatballs – all displayed in a row.

In the background, one of IKEA’s well-known instruction manuals displays an illustrated version of the receptacle, which has been dubbed a ‘meatball plate’.

IKEA’s product post has garnered more than 74,000 likes since it was posted – and plenty took to the comments section to share their excitement.

One announced: “What the hell is this? I need one.” Another gushed: “Whaaaaaat!! This is soooo cool!!!”

Some also questioned if the plate could only be served for meat, or if you could use it for other foods too.

A responder remarked: “I don’t eat meat, can I just put one big asparagus? Please say yes I need it!”

Another person went on to say: “I think I would use it for sushi rolls”, which sounds like a brilliant idea to us.

However, there were also people who questioned the need for a designated meatball plate – as some called it ‘wasteful’.

One sarcastically wrote: “Who doesn’t love end stage capitalism.” Another said: “With all the respect, but what a wasteful overproduction.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “This feels like an April Fool’s post.”

The Ikea x Gustaf Westman collection will be available in Ikea stores worldwide on 20 August. The collection items will only be available to buy in store, and will not be available for ordering online.
