Marcus Rashford goal celebration speaks volumes as Man Utd sent painful reminder

Marcus Rashford delivered a stunning performance for Barcelona in the Champions League, sending a clear message to Ruben Amorim.

The Manchester United academy graduate put on a show-stopping display against Newcastle United. After a challenging first half where his attempts were repeatedly thwarted by the Magpies’ defence, 27-year-old Rashford came into his own after the break.

He netted two stunning goals, the first being a precise header from a Jules Kounde cross, leaving Newcastle’s goalkeeper Nick Pope helpless. While Rashford wasn’t particularly known for his aerial prowess at Old Trafford, his second goal was a reminder of why he was considered one of England’s most promising talents.

Dodging a challenge from a Newcastle defender, he unleashed a 25-yard strike that spectacularly found its way into the far corner off the post.

The celebrations following each goal were markedly different. After his first goal – his first in the competition since October 2021 – Rashford was a picture of pure joy.

However, after his sensational second, Rashford jogged over to the corner flag and placed his right index finger to his head – a celebration familiar to most United fans and synonymous with the England international.

Given the nature of his celebration, it could have been a pointed message to Amorim, who had sidelined him from the United first team for nearly a year. The Portuguese manager had expressed dissatisfaction with Rashford’s training attitude and excluded him from his plans, before shipping him out on loan to Aston Villa last January.

Amorim relegated Rashford to the infamous ‘Bomb Squad’ this summer, where he stayed until Barcelona came calling for a loan deal. He had been finding his feet with the La Liga side, up until last weekend.

In Barcelona’s 6-0 thrashing of Valencia, Rashford provided an impressive assist, delivering a pinpoint, in-swinging pass to Raphinha. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick rewarded him with a starting spot against Newcastle and it’s fair to say Rashford seized his chance.

The German manager replaced him with Dani Olmo in the 82nd minute after a brilliant night’s work. The only downside for Rashford is that he has set a high standard for a fanbase accustomed to watching top-tier wingers.

Most importantly for Rashford, his two-goal performance was witnessed by England manager Thomas Tuchel, who was present at St. James’ Park.

Meanwhile, United’s new £200million attacking trio Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko have only managed to net one goal between them in all competitions.
