‘Essential’ radiator job Brits must do now to ‘reduce energy bills’ this winter

By staff20 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

As the colder months approach, Britons are being urged to make sure their radiators are kept clean in a bid to reduce energy bills. Here are six key tips to follow

Households are being advised to ensure their radiators remain spotless before the chillier months arrive in an effort to slash energy costs. The boiler sits at the centre of any heating system and plays a vital role in ensuring it operates effectively.

Property and gardening specialists at Posh.co.uk have revealed six essential tips to follow before switching on the heating this autumn and winter. One of the guidelines involves maintaining your radiator and ensuring it stays clean.

An accumulation of dust can stop heat from circulating, forcing the radiator to work overtime to warm the space, reports the Express.

Andy Ellis, property and gardening specialist at Posh.co.uk said: “Being prepped ahead of winter by making sure all of the radiators around your home are in good condition is really important.

“As well as ensuring they’re all working efficiently, it can also be a big help towards your energy bills being lower. The better your radiators are working, the less time and money they’ll take to heat your home”.

How to prepare your radiators before switching the heating on:

Clean the radiator

Maintaining spotless radiators can also contribute to cutting energy costs over time. A collection of dust forces radiators to work overtime to warm your space.

It’s crucial to stay on top of any dust build up to maximise your heating system’s performance. Property owners can use a basic duster to tackle this or a vacuum as well.

If people have the correct attachments for the vacuum they may be able to reach down and between the fins as well.

Ensure your boiler is serviced

It’s crucial to have your boiler serviced before the daily use of heating begins in the colder months. Giving yourself ample time to address any issues will ensure your boiler and heating system are winter-ready.

Bleed your radiators

To keep your radiators functioning efficiently, bleed them all around your home. Utilise a radiator key to release any potential trapped air pockets.

Annual bleeding of your radiators ensures they don’t take too long to heat up, which can subsequently help lower energy bills.

Look out for sludge

Your radiators may have gathered sludge over the summer months, particularly if they’ve been idle.

If required, a professional can carry out a power flush to cleanse the system if it’s significantly blocked, but there are methods to do this task yourself.

Firstly, bleed the radiator and remove it from the wall. Then, use a hosepipe on the inlet to eliminate all the dirt until the water runs clear.

Insulate your pipes

Insulating pipes, especially in unheated areas, prevents heat loss and reduces the risk of freezing. This can also be another effective method of helping you save more on your energy bills.

Switch on the heating for brief periods

With radiators likely having been inactive over the summer months, switching on the heating for just 10-30 minutes every week will ensure that the pipes are in good working order without any trapped air or dust accumulation.
