Rio Ferdinand sparks ‘7 points’ Manchester United debate after Chelsea victory

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand watched on as his old club picked up their second victory of the season against Chelsea in a crucial clash at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has ignited a discussion about the Reds’ early season form following their 2-1 win against Chelsea at Old Trafford. United went into the clash desperate for a win and got off to a flying start when Robert Sanchez saw red for bringing down Bryan Mbeumo outside the box.

Ruben Amorim’s side quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Bruno Fernandes tapping in after Patrick Dorgu nodded the ball towards goal. United had Chelsea on the back foot now and doubled their lead in the 37th minute through a Casemiro header.

But the Brazilian’s night took a turn when he received his marching orders for a second yellow card just before the break, evening out the numbers on the pitch. Amorim’s team seemed set for a comfortable win until Trevoh Chalobah’s late goal threatened to spoil the party.

Nonetheless, United clung on to claim a vital three points. After the match, Ferdinand reached out on X to gauge his followers’ opinions on United’s start to the season, hinting that he was pleased with the points haul.

“After five games playing Arsenal/Manchester City/Chelsea, are we satisfied with seven points,” he queried. As previously noted, the Reds have already squared off against three of the traditional ‘Big Six’ this season, with losses to Arsenal and City preceding their triumph over Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Outside of the ‘Big Six’, United remain undefeated in the Premier League. The Reds clinched a victory against Burnley in a rollercoaster match, following a lacklustre 1-1 draw at Fulham.

A penalty shootout loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup has piled on the pressure for Amorim, a sentiment echoed by United fans in response to Ferdinand’s query. The majority of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current points tally, but there wasn’t a significant outcry for Amorim’s dismissal.

As it stands, United are ninth in the Premier League table, just two points shy of the top four. United’s next challenge is an away game against Brentford in next Saturday’s early kick-off.
