Man Utd keep Sir Alex Ferguson record going in major boost for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United remain unbeaten against Chelsea at Old Trafford in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era with Ruben Amorim leading his side to victory over the Blues

Man Utd downed Chelsea on Saturday night as they continued their domination of the fixture

Manchester United kept up their record of not losing to Chelsea at Old Trafford in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era as they downed the Blues on Saturday night. It was a morale boosting win for Ruben Amorim, who became the latest Red Devils boss to beat the west Londoners.

Chelsea’s last victory on the red side of Manchester came in Ferguson’s final season when Juan Mata scored the only goal of the game in May 2013. Since then the Blues have endured disappointment after disappointment on their travels.

The likes of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ralf Rangnick have all avoided defeat, drawing their only games against Chelsea. However Amorim joined the likes of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in beating the Blues on their own patch.

United have largely struggled against the Premier League’s big six since Ferguson’s retirement, enduring some embarrassing losses at home and on the road. But facing Chelsea on their own patch has proved a successful fixture.

On a rain-soaked evening Amorim, who had endured a difficult start to the season, saw Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro both scored in a 2-1 victory. A late goal from Trevoh Chalobah gave Chelsea hope, but they couldn’t find an equaliser as their wait for a win at United extends beyond 12 years.

Luke Shaw told Sky Sports: “We spoke a lot before the game about winning, that was the most important thing today. You could see how much we wanted to win. The whole team defended really well and we’re happy with the three points. We started the game really well, really sharp and physical. We can punish teams with the chances we have created.

He also added: “The season is still early, we have done well so far this season. We will be ok. For us the most important thing for us is how clinical we can be and defending our box.”

Juan Mata remains Chelsea’s last match winner at Man Utd -his strike coming back in 2013

Ferguson’s tenure remains the benchmark for the managers at Old Trafford with the Scot the last man to deliver the Premier League title. He did so weeks before calling time on his managerial career – and the club have not replicated that success since.

United have only finished second twice since he left the dugout – and on both occasions they were never able to properly challenge the champions. Mourinho and Solskjaer the only men to get the Red Devils to the runners-up spot.
