The launch of a crucial new facility at East Midlands Airport will unlock global opportunities for the region, according to the multibillion-pound firm behind it.

Federal Express Corporation, more commonly known as FedEx, unveiled its 19,000 sq ft specially-constructed freight hub at the Castle Donington airport on Tuesday, September 16.

The world’s biggest delivery giant has declared the new facility will boost freight handling efficiency and offer customers improved access to the US, Asia-Pacific, European Union, and the rest of the world.

Steve Johnson, managing director of FedEx’s air operations in the UK, said: “For businesses in the East Midlands, the additional capacity and enhanced safety features mean more efficient access to the US, APAC, EU, and beyond – helping them seize growth opportunities in a rapidly evolving global trade environment.

“This new freight facility builds on the momentum of our recent expansion in Manchester and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to strengthening our operations across the UK.

“Together, these commitments create a more resilient and connected FedEx network, enabling us to support the increasing flow of goods between the East Midlands, the Northwest, and international markets.”

FedEx, the global delivery giant that handles 17 million packages daily, has said its new facility at East Midlands Airport will streamline freight cargo preparation and bolster capacity to meet growing customer demand on key international trade routes, reports Nottinghamshire Live.

East Midlands Airport has previously stated that its burgeoning cargo operation could generate over 20,000 jobs in the future. The airport chiefs are currently plotting an expansion that includes 122,000m2 of warehouse space, new taxiways and stands for up to 18 additional aircraft.

Last year, East Midlands Airport managed £37 billion worth of freight, but with the proposed expansion, they anticipate a 54% surge in express freight cargo volumes over the next two decades.

The airport cites its central location, ample runway capacity and relatively low landing fees as factors giving it a competitive edge over rivals like Heathrow.

Cargo planes start touching down from around 6pm until the early hours of the morning, when passenger flights take over. This operation connects to 185 of the world’s major cities including New York, Dubai, Tokyo and Mumbai.
